So I volunteered to set up a gift exchange for my family this year and now I am kinda panicking because I have no idea how to actually do this without it being a total mess. We are spread out all over the country so it has to be virtual which I thought would be easy but now Im realizing I dont know how to pick names fairly without someone seeing who they got or ending up with themselves? My logic was maybe to just put everyone in a hat but since we arent in the same room that obviously wont work.

I was looking at some websites but there are like a million of them and I dont know which ones are legit or if they are gonna spam my aunt with ads. We have about 12 people and a budget of around 30 bucks per person which seems fair. I really want to get this sorted before December starts so people actually have time to ship stuff. Do you guys use specific apps for this or do I just email everyone? Sorry if this is a super dumb question but I am genuinely lost here...

Honestly, skip the email route. People always accidentally reveal who they have. Just use Elfster. It is the industry standard and pretty safe compared to the random sites that just want your email for spam. Just be careful to set up the exclusions if you have couples who shouldnt buy for each other. It handles the drawing automatically so no one sees the results until its time.
