Im losing my mind trying to split grocery bills with my roommate. We do almost all our shopping at Walmart because its the only place near our apartment in Chicago that doesnt break the bank, but every single week we end up arguing over who owes what. The receipt totals are always messed up because of taxes and random coupons and I honestly cant do the math anymore. I need something that actually works for shared households.

  • Needs to handle split items (like if I buy milk but she buys the eggs).
  • Must be free or dirt cheap because we are both broke college students.
  • Ideally syncs across iPhones and Androids since shes on a Google Pixel and I have an old 11.

Ive been looking at Splitwise, but it feels like overkill for just grocery runs, and I briefly checked out Splitter, but im not sure if it handles itemized receipts well. Someone mentioned Grosh too? I really just need a simple way to upload the Walmart receipt and have it tell us who owes what before I go crazy. Does anyone actually use one of these or is there a better way to track this?

TL;DR: Stop manually calculating and start using Splitwise properly, or check out Tricount if you hate the bloat. In my experience, you are overcomplicating the receipt issue. I have tried many apps over the years, and honestly, the best move is to use Splitwise but simplify your input method. Just enter the total and hit the split evenly button, or use their itemized feature if you really need to separate that one carton of milk. It works perfectly between my iPhone and my partner's Pixel. If Splitwise feels like too much, Tricount is another solid free option that is way more stripped back and faster for just grocery splits. Don't waste time trying to upload receipts, as most OCR scanners struggle with messy Walmart itemization anyway. Just input the final total and move on with your life.
