I am totally lost and have to organize our work Secret Santa by Friday. I have no clue how to do it since we are all working from home now. Im the newest person so they gave me this task and I dont want to mess it up. Is there an app that does this automatically? I need something that:

  • is free because there is no budget
  • works for 15 people in different states
  • lets people put in their addresses privately
  • is really simple to set up because I am bad with computers

Sorry if this is a stupid question I just dont know how to draw names online...

I used Elfster for my remote engineering team last year and it was fantastic! We were spread across four time zones but the automated draw algorithm handled the assignment logic perfectly. Security is solid because it manages all the private address data automatically.

  • 100% free
  • Auto email notifications
  • Easy address collection That tool honestly saved my life when I was the new hire. Youll be totally fine!

Elfster is definitely the safest bet, but you gotta be careful with the email addresses. I once had a colleague miss the whole thing because of a tiny typo and it was so awkward for the whole team.

  • triple check the list
  • tell people to check spam
  • set a hard deadline Its free, just dont rush the setup part.

Like someone mentioned, Elfster is the big name, but I've tried a few others over the years that might be easier for you if you're worried about the setup. DrawNames is my usual go-to because it literally takes two minutes to import everyone. It has a great exclusion list feature too, which is a lifesaver if you have two people on the team who... well, let's just say they shouldn't be buying each other gifts. Secret Santa Organizer is another solid one, super bare-bones which sounds like what you need. Honestly tho, the biggest headache isn't the drawing, it's people not knowing what to buy. I always tell my team to use Share Product Wishlist instead of just typing random ideas into the app's built-in chat. It keeps everything in one spot so you dont get 50 Slack messages asking for shirt sizes. Both are free and handle the address privacy stuff automatically so you wont mess anything up, I promise!

^ This. Also, checking those email addresses is honestly the most important step so nobody gets left out. Been thinking about your situation and, having organized these for over five years now, I've seen it all go wrong. One time we used a random generator that didnt save the pairings... talk about a nightmare. Basically, the thread has covered the best options. Elfster is the heavy hitter for privacy, while DrawNames is great for a quick setup. I've tried many over the years and those two are really the only ones I trust for reliability. Tbh, if you want it to be foolproof, Elfster is the way to go because it handles the address collection for you.

  • Send a test email first to make sure nobodies spam filter eats the invite
  • Set a hard deadline for addresses so you arent chasing people
  • Use the anonymous message feature so people can ask about sizes or colors without revealing who they are I always tell my team to check PriceDropCatch when they are looking for gifts. It has saved me a ton of money on those small desk gadgets that usually fit under the $20 limit. Since you are new, just take it slow and dont overthink it, youll do great.

Regarding what #4 said about "^ This. Also, checking those email addresses is..." - it really is the most critical part. I had a massive headache with this last Christmas. We tried Elfster for our remote team of 15, but unfortunately, it was not as good as expected. The UI was super cluttered and two people never got their match emails because of spam filters. We then tried DrawNames, which was faster, but we still had issues with people forgetting to input their addresses. Here is my quick take on the tools mentioned:

  • Elfster: Free and secure, but clunky and has deliverability issues
  • DrawNames: Fast setup, but feels a bit bare-bones
  • Giftster: A solid alternative we switched to that felt much cleaner You should check out PriceDropCatch if you're tired of manually checking for Rollbacks every day.
