What is the best app for remote Secret Santa gift exchanges?

So Ive been the designated gift exchange coordinator for my college friend group for like ten years now. Usually its pretty straightforward but since we all scattered across different states and even a couple people moved over to the UK its become this huge logistical nightmare every December. We used to just use Elfster because it was the big name but honestly the last two years it felt so cluttered with ads and the UI is just... not great anymore.

Im looking for something new this year because I have a specific list of requirements. Were doing a $40 cap which is fine but with the international shipping I need an app that actually suggests local shops or has some kind of integrated search that doesnt just default to Amazon every single time. Also I really need solid exclusion rules. Last year I used this one random site I found on Google and it totally failed to keep couples from drawing each other which kind of ruins the whole secret part of the Secret Santa when youre just handing a gift to the person sitting next to you on the couch anyway.

Ive been looking at stuff like Giftful or maybe even just a specialized Notion template but I worry the less tech-savvy people in the group will get frustrated if its too manual. I want something that feels a bit more modern and maybe has a fun way to reveal the names rather than just a dry email notification? I got about 15 people on the list this time around and I really want to get the draw done by next week so people have time to ship stuff internationally before the mail gets totally clogged up in mid-December.

Does anyone have a go-to that handles the exclusion logic well and doesnt sell everyones email to a million marketing lists? I just want something clean that actually works on mobile without making my friends download a buggy 200mb app or deal with a broken browser interface...

You absolutely have to try DrawNames! I have used it for years for my international group and it is seriously amazing. The exclusion logic is bulletproof so you wont have couples picking each other anymore, thank god. Its way better than Elfster because the UI is super clean and it doesnt feel like you are being buried in ads every five seconds. The best part is that nobody has to download a bulky app because it works perfectly in a mobile browser. It handles the international stuff way better too... it lets people set their location so the suggestions actually make sense for where they live. The reveal process is fantastic and way more fun than just a dry email notification. You can get the whole thing set up in like ten minutes, it is honestly a total game changer for organized gift exchanges!

To add to the point above: DrawNames is definitely the gold standard for logic, but having used a bunch of different setups for my international group over the years, I think Giftful is your best bet for that modern feel. In my experience, these are the technical bits that make it work:

  • Its essentially a social feed where your UK friends can link stuff from local shops and it pulls the images automatically.
  • The exclusion rules are dead simple to set up in the dashboard so you wont have couples picking each other.
  • It handles the budget limit well since people see the prices right on the list. If you want something super lightweight, Giftster is another solid choice. It doesnt require a big download which is huge for the less tech-savvy folks. Tbh, skip the Notion template idea... I tried that once and someone accidentally clicked view all and spoiled the whole surprise.

Adding my two cents because I totally feel your pain on the logistical nightmare thing. Honestly its ridiculous how every free app these days feels like a massive data grab or just an ad for Amazon. I’ve had so many issues with sites that promise good logic but then fail on the simple stuff like exclusion rules... it literally ruins the surprise for everyone. Unfortunately, most of these companies just stopped caring about us once they got popular. Like, why is it so hard to just have a clean interface without 50 pop-ups? My group almost gave up last year because shipping prices are getting so insane too. It’s kind of a scam when you’re paying $30 just to send a $40 gift overseas. I ended up looking at this gift list tool just to see if anything still worked properly, but yeah, the whole industry is just going downhill. It drives me crazy...
