If you want a more robust alternative, a basic Google Sheets spreadsheet works well tho it takes a bit more setup. For pure simplicity, the dedicated gift apps are usually better for someone who isnt super tech savvy. I have had no complaints with this setup and it definitely beats losing paper lists.
