Which ultrawide gaming monitor is best for competitive shooters?

Honestly Im so beyond frustrated right now. I spent way too much money on this current curved monitor thinking it would be the ultimate setup for Valorant and Apex but man was I wrong. Every time I get into a fast paced engagement it feels like my eyes are playing catch up because the ghosting is just insane and the response time is nowhere near what they claimed on the box. I live in Chicago and I dont really have a local shop where I can test these things out in person so I relied on some sketchy review sites and now Im stuck with this blurry mess. My budget is around 800 bucks maybe a little more if it actually fixes my performance issues.

My logic was that more screen real estate equals better peripheral vision but now I realize that if the motion blur is this bad it doesnt even matter how much I can see. Im looking for something that hits that sweet spot of an ultrawide but actually performs in competitive shooters. Should I just give up on the ultrawide dream for competitive stuff and go back to a standard 24 or 27 inch 240hz panel? Or is there something out there that doesnt ghost like crazy? Ive looked at a few OLED options but the price tag is making me sweat and I dont know if the burn-in risk is worth it when I play for like 6 hours straight on weekends. I feel like Ive gone down a massive rabbit hole and now Im just confused.

  • Does anyone actually use an ultrawide for serious competitive play or am I just setting myself up for failure?
  • Is it possible to find a panel that doesnt ghost under 1k?
  • Should I just cut my losses and sell this thing on Marketplace because I cant stand looking at the smearing in dark corners anymore...

Just tell me what works because Im tired of guessing.

Honestly, you aren't crazy for wanting ultrawide, but most panels are just too slow for titles like Valorant. The smearing you see is likely because those panels use older VA tech which just cant keep up. If you want to stay ultrawide without the ghosting mess, OLED is the only way to go. The response times on those are instant, which is why they feel so amazing for competitive shooters! Check these out if you want to fix your setup:

  • Alienware AW3423DWF 34" QD-OLED 165Hz 0.1ms is the gold standard for your budget. The motion clarity is unreal compared to what you have.
  • LG 34GN850-B 34" Nano IPS 144Hz 1ms if you really want to avoid OLED burn-in risk. It uses an IPS panel so you get zero ghosting without the extra worry. Personally, I made the switch to the Alienware and never looked back. Youll love the speed!

Late to the party but honestly, stop falling for the VA marketing specs. Most claim 1ms but are just lying. If you really need that ultrawide experience, look into the Alienware AW3423DWF 34in OLED 165Hz. It hits the sweet spot for motion clarity without the smearing. Just be careful with static elements in Valorant, maybe hide your HUD settings? Check out RTINGS for their motion blur testing tables before dropping another grand.

Saw this earlier and it totally reminds me of when my cousin tried to stream competitive games on a huge ultrawide. What a disaster that turned into for his desk space...
