Best way to track shared Walmart grocery expenses?

So my roommate and I finally decided to stop living like cavemen and start actually splitting our grocery bills properly. We basically do all our shopping at the local Walmart near downtown because honestly its just cheaper and we dont have a car so the bus drops us right there. The problem is weve just been alternating who pays for the weekly haul, but since our diets are totally different and I end up buying a bunch of organic stuff while they just grab frozen pizzas, it never actually evens out. We tried just using a shared Google Sheet last month but I swear we both forgot to update it half the time and now its just a mess of numbers that dont make sense.

Ive been looking into getting a dedicated app to handle this so we can just track things as we go, and Im torn between Splitwise and Tricount. I know Splitwise is super popular and the interface is clean, but I heard they started locking a bunch of features behind a paywall recently and I really dont want to spend any money on this if I dont have to. Then there is Tricount which seems a bit more basic but maybe that is better since we just need to track groceries, not split rent or utility bills. I need something that works well for two people on a really tight budget who just want to keep things fair without it becoming a huge chore every Sunday night. Do you guys think I should just bite the bullet and pay for Splitwise or is there an easier way to just track the Walmart receipts without wanting to pull my hair out every time we get back from the store... maybe there is another app Im totally missing?

Re: Honestly, keeping track of shared grocery bills is a total headache... totally agree. I used to be obsessed with Splitwise, but Tricount is honestly fine if you just need basics. Honestly, if you guys are really trying to save, just use Splitwise if you want, but check out the free tier first. Honestly, simple is better. Just input the total and split it right at the register. Saves so much time honestly.

Honestly, keeping track of shared grocery bills is a total headache once you stop just taking turns. I used to deal with the same spreadsheet mess until I realized manual entry is just asking for trouble. If you want to avoid the paywall on the bigger apps, Tricount is a solid, no-nonsense choice that does exactly what you need without all the extra fluff.

  • It keeps things simple for just two people.
  • You wont have to worry about locked features.
  • Just snap a photo of the receipt right when you leave the store. Stick to something straightforward and you wont get stressed out. If you really want a stress-free way to manage shared costs, Splitwise is fine too if you dont mind the occasional pop-up, but definitely try the free versions first before paying for anything.
