So I finally caved and bought an iPad for my art class because my old sketchbook is just falling apart, but now Im terrified Im gonna drop it and smash the screen within a week. I honestly have no idea how these cases work or what makes one better than another. Im looking at Amazon and there are like a million options and they all look kinda the same to me? Its super overwhelming.

I need something pretty rugged because I carry it in my tote bag with my keys and other junk, plus I tend to be a bit clumsy when I grab coffee. My budget is probably around 50 bucks, maybe a little more if it means I wont have to replace it later. Im based in Chicago so I guess I need something that can handle the commute too? I dont really care about it being super thin or light, I just want to make sure the thing doesnt break if it hits the sidewalk.

Is there a specific brand people trust or should I just grab the cheapest one with the most reviews? I saw some that have magnets and some that are basically bricks, and I dont even know which kind is standard. Do I need a screen protector too? Everyone keeps telling me different things and I dont want to waste money on something that wont actually protect the glass. What are you guys using for yours?

Yeah, totally agree with the last person about avoiding the bargain bin stuff. Your screen is way too expensive to gamble on a 10 dollar plastic shell. Since you are commuting in Chicago and throwing it in a bag with keys, you need something that covers the screen when its not in use. I use the Spigen Tough Armor Pro Case because it handles drops better than most and is usually way cheaper than the premium brands.

  • The kickstand is actually useful for art apps
  • The raised edges keep the screen off the table
  • Fits well even with a separate glass screen protector Definitely grab a Spigen Tempered Glass Screen Protector too. Its cheap insurance against scratches from your keys. Honestly, dont overthink it, just get something with a decent hinge and solid corner bumpers.

Congrats on the new gear! Honestly, before you drop another dime, what specific iPad model number do you have? Knowing that helps a ton because some fit super tight while others have different camera bumps. Since you are worried about your keys scratching things up, you honestly need a folio-style case that keeps the screen covered in your bag. I really love the UAG Metropolis Series Case for iPad because it feels like a tank but doesnt cost as much as the super high-end stuff. It handles the Chicago commute perfectly and protects the edges like a champ. Also, check out sites like Woot for deals on open-box cases, you can save a fortune that way! Have you looked into those yet? Def let me know your model and I can tell you if that UAG fits.

Congrats on the new iPad! Honestly, skip the cheap stuff because you really get what you pay for. Since you are tossing it in a bag with keys, you definitely want a hard shell. I have been using the OtterBox Defender Series Case for iPad for years and it is basically a tank. It handles drops and coffee spills like a champ. It comes with a built-in screen cover too, which helps keep those keys from scratching the glass. It might feel a bit bulky, but for a Chicago commute, its totally worth the peace of mind. Just make sure you get the right one for your specific screen size. You wont regret it, seriously.
