What are the best drawing apps for an iPad right now if I actually want to learn to illustrate properly? I just picked up an M2 iPad Pro because my old laptop died and I figured I might as well get into digital art since I have some downtime between jobs, but Im honestly overwhelmed by the options.
I keep seeing Procreate mentioned literally everywhere online and it seems like the gold standard, but then I read a few reddit threads saying Clip Studio Paint is better for long-term projects because of the vector tools and organization features. Im just worried Procreate is too simple or that Clip Studio has a massive learning curve that will just frustrate me.
My budget is pretty flexible since I already spent a chunk on the tablet, I just want something that wont make me want to throw the screen against the wall. Im living in a tiny apartment in Seattle and really just want to do character designs and maybe some basic comic stuff. Does anyone actually prefer one over the other for a total beginner who plans to stick with this for the next few years? I just dont want to waste time learning a software that I'll eventually outgrow...
Honestly, if you are worried about outgrowing your software, you might want to consider Adobe Fresco as a middle ground. I spent a long time using Apple iPad Pro 11-inch M2 512GB and found that having access to both live brushes and vector tools in one interface was a huge plus when I was still figuring out my style.
> I just dont want to waste time learning a software that I'll eventually outgrow I totally get that feeling. When I first got my Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch M2 256GB I went back and forth for weeks. Procreate is honestly amazing for just starting out because the interface is so clean. You wont get bogged down in menus while you're trying to figure out your style. That said, I ended up switching to Celsys Clip Studio Paint EX for my comic projects. The vector layers are a lifesaver when you realize your character proportions are slightly off. It felt like a mountain at first, but once you memorize a few shortcuts, it just clicks. Procreate is better for quick sketches, but if you want to commit to long-term character design, the extra features in CSP are worth the headache.
^ This. Also, check out Affinity Designer 2 iPad Edition. The persona and vector tools are precise for character work. I found the asset management beats everything else for long-term projects.
