Whats the absolute best protective case I can get for my iPad Pro right now? I keep seeing people swear by the OtterBox Defender but it looks way too bulky, and then the Spigen ones seem decent but I cant tell if they actually survive drops on concrete. Im based in Chicago and need something that wont fall apart by the time my winter commute starts since I take it everywhere for grad school work. My budget is like 60 bucks max. Anyone got a recommendation that isnt just pure plastic junk?

Honestly, I tried the Spigen Tough Armor Pro 12.9 inch Rugged after a bad experience with cheaper shells, and it was mostly solid, though the kickstand hinge felt flimsy under pressure. If you want real protection without the bulk, look at the UAG Metropolis Series iPad Pro 11-inch Impact Resistant.

  • It actually meets military drop-test standards.
  • Much lighter than Otterbox.
  • Doesn't crack in sub-zero temps. Everything else in that price range usually just feels like cheap, brittle plastic tbh.

Just checking in, but the ESR Ascend Trifold Case is solid and affordable. If you need more, check the Supcase Unicorn Beetle Pro Rugged Case, honestly better than bulky OtterBoxes.

Honestly, skip the OtterBox if you have to carry that thing around campus all day. Lugging that brick through Chicago winters is a total nightmare, and honestly, the extra weight gets old fast when you're already carrying textbooks. Over the years, I've tried many cases, and the biggest mistake people make is buying those cheap multi-packs on marketplaces that feel like flimsy plastic shells. Here is how I look at it now:

  • Avoid anything that doesn't have a raised bezel because one face-down drop on a sidewalk is all it takes.
  • Look for dual-layer protection that actually feels grippy in your hand; if it feels slippery, it's gonna end up on the pavement eventually.
  • Check the corners, since that's where 90% of the impact goes. I'd suggest sticking to brands that specialize in drop-tested materials instead of the bulkier survivalist cases. You really just need solid corners and a grippy texture.
