Ive been using iPads for digital art and note-taking since the original Pro came out, so I feel like Ive tried pretty much every tempered glass brand under the sun. Usually, I just grab whatever is top-rated on Amazon and call it a day, but I recently upgraded to the 13-inch M4 model and the screen is so thin and vibrant that my usual cheap protectors are just killing the clarity. It looks grainy or rainbow-effect distorted under the bright studio lights where I work, which is driving me insane when Im trying to color grade or do precision line work.
I need something that offers real scratch protection because I have a habit of tossing my tablet into my gear bag when I head out to coffee shops in downtown Seattle, but I cant afford to lose the display fidelity. Ive looked at those paper-like matte films, but honestly, those have chewed through my Apple Pencil tips way too fast in the past, and I dont really want to go down that rabbit hole again. Plus, the oleophobic coating on my current screen protector started wearing off after like two weeks of heavy use, leaving it a greasy smudge nightmare that ruins the premium feel of the glass.
Im looking to spend maybe 40 or 50 bucks max, which I know is a bit higher than the bargain bin stuff, but I just want something that actually lasts longer than a month. Is there anything out there that is genuinely high-transparency and scratch-resistant without feeling like I smeared Vaseline over the display? I dont care about anti-glare as much as I care about keeping the colors popping and the surface smooth enough that I dont feel like I'm dragging a pencil across sandpaper. If anyone has found a glass that doesnt turn the screen into a blurry mess or peel at the edges after a week, please let me know, because I am honestly about to just go raw dog and hope for the best...
Adding my two cents, are you open to trying the JETech Tempered Glass 2-Pack? It is super cheap, but do you prefer a wet or dry installation kit for that?
Honestly, I feel your pain. I went through the same frustration with cheap glass until I settled on a couple of reliable options. TL;DR: Go with Spigen EZ Fit Tempered Glass for the easiest install and solid clarity, or ESR Armorite Screen Protector if you want the absolute best scratch resistance without the graininess. The Spigen is super affordable and keeps the colors punchy, which is great for your art work. It doesn't attract as many fingerprints as those bargain ones too. If you are really paranoid about gear bag scratches, the ESR version is a bit tougher. It feels like real glass and the oleophobic coating held up for me for way longer than two weeks. Both are smooth, not gritty like the paper-feel ones. You should be pretty satisfied with either.
Hey, just saw this thread and honestly, going raw dog is risky for that M4 display. If you hate that grainy matte look and want to keep colors popping, I've had decent luck with the Belkin ScreenForce Tempered Glass for iPad Pro 13-inch. It is a bit pricier than the random stuff on Amazon, but the clarity is genuinely top tier. It doesn't have that weird rainbow distortion you're getting from the cheaper kits, and it stays smooth for ages. Another solid shout is the ZAGG InvisibleShield Glass Elite for iPad Pro 13-inch, which has a really good antimicrobial coating that holds up against smudges way better than standard glass. They go on sale all the time on their site, so definitely check their clearance page before paying full retail. It fits your budget and feels way more premium than the bargain bin brands.
