Ugh, this is so frustrating. I just bought an RTX 4090 and now I'm stuck because I have absolutely no clue what power supply I need. I keep reading about these weird cables and how they might melt or something? Im terrified of breaking a card that cost me like two months of rent. My budget is around 150 to 200 bucks and I need to get this rig finished by next weekend since I have a week off work for gaming. I live in the UK if that matters for brands. Ive been looking at stuff on Amazon but there are so many letters and numbers like ATX 3.0 and gold or platinum ratings and honestly my head is spinning. Do I really need that fancy new cable or can I just use the ones that came in the box? I just want something that wont explode and fits my budget so I can finally start playing Cyberpunk in 4k. Does anyone have a specific brand or model that just works without me needing to be an electrician to figure it out?

Honestly, trying to piece together a build for a 4090 is stressful enough without the cable melting anxiety. You definitely need to ditch the adapter that came in the box and go with an ATX 3.0 unit that has a dedicated 12VHPWR cable. It just seats better and gives me way more peace of mind tbh. For your budget, these are solid bets that have treated me well:

  • Corsair RM850e 850W 80 Plus Gold ATX 3.0
  • MSI MPG A850G PCIE5 850W 80 Plus Gold ATX 3.0 Make sure to push that cable all the way in until it clicks, dont leave any gap at all. People keep melting them because they dont seat the connector properly and it wiggles while the card is pulling serious power. Also, dont bend the cable super sharp right at the connector, keep it nice and straight for a bit before you route it to the side. Its honestly not rocket science, just be careful with the seating and you wont have to worry about your rent money going up in smoke. Basically, just grab one of those, make sure it clicks, and you're good to go for that 4k gaming session. Just take your time with the build and dont force anything.
