Best PSU for a silent home server build?

My current server PSU is driving me absolutely insane. It has this high-pitched coil whine that keeps me awake at night in my tiny studio apartment and I need to replace it like yesterday. I'm building a low-power home media server that runs 24/7, so silence is my main priority. Budget is max 120 bucks. I'm torn between the Corsair RM750e and the Seasonic Focus PX-550. The Corsair is cheaper and readily available at my local Best Buy, but I keep reading that Seasonic is the king of quiet. Which one of these is actually gonna be quieter under low load?

TL;DR: Get the RMx series instead of the RMe. Honestly, I went with the Corsair RM650x 650W 80 Plus Gold for my budget build and I am super satisfied. Zero coil whine and the fan basically never spins under low media server loads. Works well, and it is easily under your 120 buck limit. Let me know if you need help checking if it fits your case!

Honestly, coil whine is the absolute worst, especially in a studio apartment where you cant escape it. I went through this last year with my own home server. If you want absolute silence under low load, I would go with the Seasonic Focus PX-550 550W 80 Plus Platinum. Here is how they stack up in the real world:

  • Seasonic Focus PX-550: This one has a hybrid fan mode that keeps the fan completely off at low loads. Since your media server is gonna draw maybe 50-100W idle, the fan wont even spin. Plus, Seasonics build quality is top tier.
  • Corsair RM750e 750W 80 Plus Gold: Its a decent budget option, but the fan curve is known to be a bit aggressive when it does kick in. Some people also complain about the fan bearing making a clicking noise in the RMe series. Another killer option if you want to save a few bucks is the be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 550W 80 Plus Gold. Its incredibly quiet and usually cheaper than the Seasonic. Personally, I would grab the Seasonic. The platinum efficiency is nice for a 24/7 run, and peace of mind is worth the extra cash.

TL;DR

  • Before deciding, what is your actual peak power draw and what case are you using? Matching the wattage correctly is super important for keeping the fan idle. Honestly, I have a very similar setup and I've been super satisfied with how quiet it runs, zero complaints. But since this is going 24/7, we want to make sure it's reliable and safe. What components are you actually running in there, and what's the estimated total wattage? Also, is it a standard ATX case or something smaller? Once we know the power draw and space constraints, it'll be much easier to pinpoint what works best for your space.
