So I am building my first PC ever and honestly Im a bit overwhelmed. I picked up an Intel i9-14900K because I want to get into high-end video editing and maybe some 3D rendering in my free time, but now I am stuck on the power supply. I keep seeing people say this processor pulls a massive amount of power and I dont want to fry anything. I was looking at 850W units since a friend told me that should be enough but I have no clue which brand is actually reliable.
My budget is around 150 dollars for the PSU and I really need to get this finished by next weekend so I can start on my project. Ive been looking at a few Corsair and Seasonic models but the ratings are confusing me. Is it better to get a gold or platinum rating? Also, do I need to worry about the new power cables for the GPU? My logic was that as long as it says 850W on the box it should work fine but now Im second guessing that. Does anyone have a specific model they would trust with a chip this expensive?

Congrats on the new build! The 14900K is a beast, honestly. Youre right to be careful because that chip loves to draw power when rendering. For a build like this, dont stress too much about Gold vs Platinum rating—the difference is basically just efficiency and your power bill. Focus on build quality instead. I have been running my workstation with a Corsair RM850x 850W 80+ Gold for ages and it has been rock solid. It handles transient spikes like a champ and is super quiet under load, which is huge if you are spending hours editing. Since you are worried about the GPU, definitely look for a PSU that includes the native 12VHPWR cable so you dont have to deal with those annoying adapters. The Seasonic FOCUS GX-850 ATX 3.0 850W 80+ Gold is another fantastic choice that is fully ATX 3.0 compliant, meaning it is designed exactly for those new power connectors.
