Finally snagged an RTX 4090 and a 14900K for my dream workstation build! Ive been building PCs for a decade, but these power spikes are giving me anxiety. Im looking for a rock solid 1200W+ unit that wont break the bank, maybe under 300 bucks. What reliable PSUs are you guys running with this combo?

Man, congrats! That rig is gonna be an absolute beast. I was super stressed about my power supply too, so I grabbed the MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80 Plus Gold and honestly it handled everything like a champ. Saved a ton of cash compared to the premium brands. Just make sure you get a native 12VHPWR cable and you'll be golden. Enjoy that insane performance!

Had a moment to think about your power concerns because honestly, that 14900K pulls massive current. You really want to look at the ATX 3.0 or 3.1 standards to avoid using those sketchy adapters. In my experience over the years, the direct 12VHPWR cable is non-negotiable for peace of mind with a 4090. Check these out if you want solid rail stability:

  • Seasonic Vertex GX-1200 1200W 80 Plus Gold ATX 3.0
  • Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1200W 80 Plus Gold ATX 3.0 The Seasonic unit is basically the gold standard for transients. If you want to nerd out on the data, check the Cultists Network PSU tier list online before you buy anything. It tracks actual voltage ripple and capacitor quality across different batches. Just dont cheap out on the cables, okay?

That build is insane! Are you planning to overclock that 14900K? I love my Corsair HX1200 1200W 80 Plus Platinum, but checking your cooling clearance is super important first.

Congrats on the new build! Honestly, the power spikes on the 4090 are no joke, but you dont need to spend a fortune to keep things stable. Ive been running a similar setup and these units have been rock solid for me, plus they wont totally kill your budget. Just make sure you grab something with the native 12VHPWR cable so you dont have to mess around with those bulky adapters.

  • MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80 Plus Gold
  • This one is plenty for most builds and usually sits at a great price point.
  • Corsair RM1200x Shift 1200W 80 Plus Gold
  • The side cable layout is actually super handy if you have a tight case. You should be totally fine with either of these. Just keep an eye on sales, they pop up all the time.
