I have been rocking an old 1080p 60Hz monitor for what feels like forever, and I finally managed to upgrade my PC build recently. I am now running a system that can actually handle higher resolutions, and it feels like a total waste to keep playing on this blurry screen. I have heard that 1440p is the sweet spot for PC gaming right now, especially if you are looking for that perfect balance between sharp visuals and high frame rates.
The problem is, my budget is pretty tight after spending most of my savings on the GPU and CPU. I really need to keep this purchase under $300, which I know is a bit of a challenge if I want something high-quality. I am mostly looking for a 27-inch display because I have heard that is where 1440p really shines in terms of pixel density. I primarily play fast-paced shooters like Apex Legends and Valorant, but I also love diving into single-player RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077, so I am looking for a monitor that handles both well.
I have been doing some digging and seeing a few models pop up, like the Gigabyte M27Q or some of the LG UltraGear options, but the prices seem to jump around a lot. I am also a bit confused about panel types; I think I want an IPS panel for the better colors and viewing angles, but I am worried about IPS glow or if I should be looking at VA panels instead for better contrast. Basically, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the technical specs and model numbers that look almost identical.
I am looking for a few specific things:
- A refresh rate of at least 144Hz or higher
- Good response times to avoid ghosting in fast games
- Decent build quality that won't wobble on my desk
Does anyone have any recent recommendations for a solid 1440p monitor that actually stays under that $300 mark? I would love to hear from anyone who has bought one recently. What has your experience been like, and are there any specific models I should definitely avoid?

Respectfully, I'd consider another approach before you overspend on those big-name models. While the UltraGear series is nice, you're often paying a premium for the brand name... honestly, I think you can get the same performance for way less. If you're looking for that sweet spot under $300, you should definitely check out the Acer Nitro XV272U V3. It usually retails for about $200-$250 and hits 180Hz, which is perfect for Apex. Another one to look at is the MSI G274QPF-QD. It's got Quantum Dot tech, so the colors really pop in games like Cyberpunk, but it stays under that $300 limit easily. Be careful with VA panels though... they have better contrast but the black smearing in fast-paced shooters like Valorant might drive you crazy. Stick with a fast IPS like these two and youll be set. Just make sure to check the stand quality, some of these budget ones can be a bit wobbly! gl man.

I've been gaming for like a decade but only just recently learned about all this monitor tech stuff lol. Basically, you definitely wanna stick with IPS for Apex and Valorant. VA panels have better contrast for scary games, but they usually have this black smearing thing that makes fast movement look super blurry... which is basically a nightmare for shooters! For your situation, I would suggest the Gigabyte M27Q 27-inch 1440p 170Hz IPS Gaming Monitor. It's actually incredible for the price and usually stays under $300. Another amazing choice is the LG UltraGear 27GP83B-B 27-inch QHD Nano IPS Gaming Monitor if you catch it on sale. Honestly, the jump from 1080p to 1440p is gonna blow your mind... it's literally like wearing glasses for the first time!! good luck dude!
