What is actually a good monitor for playing shooters like Valorant or Apex without spending a fortune? Sorry if this is a total noob question but I honestly have no idea what all the specs mean. I keep seeing people talk about refresh rates and response times but my head is spinning trying to pick one out.

Im currently playing on a super old office monitor that I pulled out of my dads closet and it feels like everything is stuttering whenever things get intense. I really want to upgrade before my birthday next month so I can actually see people before they shoot me. My budget is around 300 bucks tops because Im just a student living in Chicago right now so I cant go crazy on price.

Do I really need 240Hz or is 144Hz enough for someone like me who just plays casually but wants to stop feeling like Im at a disadvantage? Also does the resolution matter for competitive stuff or should I just stick to 1080p so I dont need a new graphics card? Everything just looks like a bunch of marketing buzzwords to me and I dont want to waste my savings on something I dont actually need...

Honestly, ditching that old office monitor is gonna feel like a total cheat code for your aim. You dont need to drop a fortune to get a massive upgrade. For most people, 144Hz is honestly plenty and itll feel buttery smooth compared to what you have right now. Stick to 1080p, you really dont want to stress your GPU with higher resolutions for competitive shooters. Check these out, they are super reliable and wont break the bank:

  • AOC 24G2SP 24 inch 165Hz IPS
  • ASUS TUF Gaming VG249Q 24 inch 144Hz IPS Both of these are amazing for the price and youll definitely notice the difference immediately. Just make sure you actually go into your display settings and set the refresh rate to the max once you plug it in, otherwise itll stay at 60Hz by default. Game on!

Jumping in here to back up what was said about 144Hz being the sweet spot. Honestly, after testing panels for years, the law of diminishing returns hits hard once you pass that mark unless you have a crazy high-end rig. Since you are on a student budget, sticking to 1080p is the smartest move because it keeps your frame rates high without needing a GPU upgrade.

  • AOC 24G2SP 165Hz 1ms IPS
  • This one is super popular for a reason. The IPS panel gives you great colors while still being fast enough for Valorant.
  • BenQ ZOWIE XL2411K 144Hz 1ms TN
  • If you want zero motion blur and dont care about viewing angles, this is the gold standard for competitive play. Just dont forget to actually enable the high refresh rate in your Windows display settings after you plug it in! Most people forget and stay stuck at 60Hz without realizing it.

Coming back to this, you really dont need 240Hz unless you are going pro and have a rig that can actually push those frames consistently. For shooters like Valorant or Apex, 144Hz is the sweet spot. It makes a world of difference compared to an old 60Hz office panel and keeps you way under budget. Definitely stick to 1080p. Higher resolution just makes your GPU work way harder for basically zero competitive advantage. Here are a few solid picks that wont break your bank while youre living in Chicago:

  • AOC Gaming 24G2SP 24-inch 165Hz 1080p
  • This one is super popular for a reason, its cheap and the colors are actually really solid for the price.
  • ASUS TUF Gaming VG249Q 23.8-inch 144Hz 1080p
  • The stand on this is way better than most budget options, which is nice if your desk space is limited.
  • BenQ ZOWIE XL2411K 24-inch 144Hz 1080p
  • If you want the classic competitive feel, this is what everyone uses in esports setups. It feels extremely snappy. Honestly, just grabbing any of these will stop that stuttering feeling immediately. Make sure you check your display settings in Windows after you plug it in, cause half the time people forget to actually set the refresh rate to 144Hz and wonder why it feels the same. You'll be hitting shots way easier, trust me.
