I really need to decide between the MacBook Air M3 and the Dell XPS 13 before classes start next month because I'm totally stuck on which one will actually last me through four years of a CS degree.
I'm starting my freshman year in a few weeks and the school gave us some specs but honestly they were kinda vague and didnt really help me narrow it down much. My budget is around $1200 maybe pushing to $1400 if it's really worth it for the long haul since I dont want to buy another one in two years. I've been looking at the M3 Air with 16GB of RAM because I heard 8GB just isnt enough for coding these days especially if I'm running a bunch of Chrome tabs and an IDE at the same time. But then I see people saying the XPS 13 is better because you dont have to worry about compatibility issues with some Windows-only software we might need for specific engineering labs.
I'm also looking at the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon as a third option but it seems way more expensive unless I find a crazy deal somewhere. The portability of the Air is super tempting since I'll be lugging it across campus all day but the lack of ports is a bit annoying. I'll mostly be doing Java and Python for now but maybe some mobile dev later on. Which one would you guys pick if you were starting over today?

Doing CS with 8GB RAM is basically asking for a headache once you start running Docker or heavy IDEs. Honestly, the Apple MacBook Air M3 13-inch 16GB RAM 512GB SSD is the winner for me. Since macOS is Unix-based, setting up your environment for Python and Java is usually just a one-command thing in the terminal. Plus, if you ever touch iOS dev, youre gonna need that Mac anyway. The Dell XPS 13 9340 Intel Core Ultra 7 16GB RAM is a decent option if you're a Windows diehard, but it gets way hotter than the Air. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 16GB RAM has the best keyboard ever made, but prices are wild unless you catch a sale... Tbh, for a freshman, the Air is just the most reliable daily driver.

I remember my first year when my old laptop overheated during a final, it was a total nightmare! Quick question tho, did your school specify any Windows-only software? If not, I'm obsessed with the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 16GB RAM RTX 4060. It's super portable but has amazing cooling for compiling huge projects compared to the XPS, which honestly throttles way too fast so you dont get stuck waiting!
