Ive been editing 4k drone footage for years on my beast of a desktop, but my upcoming trip to Tokyo next month means I need something portable. Ive looked at the latest MacBook Air M3s but Im worried about thermal throttling during longer renders. My logic was that a lightweight machine cant handle intensive color grading or multi-track timelines, but maybe Im just stuck in the past? My budget is around 1500 bucks and I really dont wanna lug a gaming laptop around. Does anyone have experience with these newer thin machines actually holding up for real-world editing or should I just look for a used pro model?

Honestly, I get why you want to ditch the heavy desktop for a trip, but I really wouldn't bank on the Air for serious 4k work. I tried running some projects on a Apple MacBook Air M3 15-inch 16GB RAM 512GB SSD and unfortunately it just hit a wall. Once that fanless design heats up, performance takes a massive hit and renders start crawling. It was honestly super disappointing for multi-track edits. If you need something reliable for Tokyo, just grab a used Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch M2 Pro 16GB RAM 512GB SSD instead. You get the active cooling which is a total lifesaver for color grading. Stick to the Pro models with fans, honestly. Don't risk your footage freezing up mid-render when you're supposed to be enjoying your trip.

- Constant thermal throttling ruins render times
- Sustained loads kill performance quickly
- Lack of active cooling is a major bottleneck I think a used pro machine with actual fans might be safer, but honestly, not sure if that fits the weight limit you want.
