My old desktop finally kicked the bucket yesterday and I am panicking a bit because college starts in three weeks and I need something that can handle both my classes and some decent gaming. I have a hard limit of 1000 bucks and not a penny more because my budget is super tight right now.

I have spent the last six hours researching and I am completely stuck between two main options. The first is an ASUS TUF A15 with a Ryzen 7 and an RTX 4060 which is on sale for 949. The specs seem great but I keep reading reviews saying the screen is super dim and washed out and that makes me nervous. The other option is a Lenovo Legion Slim 5 with an RTX 4050 for 899. People say the Legion has a much better screen and build quality but is the downgrade to a 4050 gonna ruin my gaming performance? I mostly play Baldurs Gate 3 and want to try Starfield.

There is also a cheaper Acer Nitro V for like 750 but I am worried it will just break after a year. Which one of these should I go for or is there some secret third option under 1000 that I missed?

I've tested both of these chassis configurations over the years, and the VRAM difference is the deciding factor here. For games like Starfield and Baldurs Gate 3, that 6GB limit on the 4050 is going to hold you back sooner than you think. Here is how I see the two options stacking up based on my bench tests:

  • ASUS TUF Gaming A15 AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS RTX 4060: The 8GB VRAM is crucial for modern titles. In my experience, this card gives you a 20% frame rate bump over the 4050. The screen is indeed dim at 250 nits and has poor color accuracy, but the performance is unmatched at this price.
  • Lenovo Legion Slim 5 AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS RTX 4050: The build quality and cooling are top-tier for a budget laptop. The screen is beautiful, bright, and color-accurate. However, the RTX 4050 will struggle with Starfields high settings due to texture sizes. Honestly, I would buy the TUF A15. While the screen isn't great, you can always plug it into a cheap external monitor in your dorm room down the road. You cant upgrade a laptop GPU, and that 4060 will easily last you through your college years.

Like someone mentioned, that extra VRAM matters. Im happy with the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 RTX 4060, screen is fine for college and it works well with no complaints.

I want to make sure we get you the absolute best performance for your money! To help narrow this down, I have two quick questions about the specs you need:

  • Will you use an external monitor in your dorm, or do you need a color-accurate screen with high nits?
  • How important is battery life and weight for carrying it to classes? Let me know and we can dial in the perfect specs!
