Can anyone point me to a solid laptop for a design student that stays under $1000 and actually has a screen that isnt trash? My younger sister is starting her first year at the Art Institute next month and I promised to help her gear up. Ive been building PCs for a decade so I know all about clock speeds and VRAM but finding a portable machine with decent color accuracy at this price point is proving to be way harder than I thought it would be.

Im looking for something that can handle the full Adobe Creative Cloud suite without the fans sounding like a jet engine. I was originally thinking of just getting a gaming laptop like a Nitro 5 or something but the screens on those budget gaming rigs are usually super washed out and she needs to be able to trust what she sees on her canvas. We're based in Seattle so we can hit up Microcenter if there are any in-store deals. I really want her to have at least 16gb of ram because we all know how much of a memory hog Chrome and Photoshop are when they're open at the same time. Is a refurbished M2 Air with only 8gb even worth considering for her or is that just gonna be a bottleneck in six months? Or should I just stick with a Windows machine and hope for the best...

  • I have to agree that prioritizing the screen is the right move here, but I would urge you to avoid that 8GB M2 Air. In my experience with Adobe apps, 8GB is simply not enough for long-term reliability. Once you start layering high-res assets in Photoshop, the system swaps to the SSD constantly, which isnt great for the lifespan of the machine. If you want a safe, reliable Windows alternative, I have been very satisfied with the Lenovo Slim 7 Pro X AMD Ryzen 7 6800HS 16GB RAM. It features a 14.5-inch 3K display that is factory calibrated for sRGB, so the color accuracy is spot on right out of the box. No complaints about the build quality either. The fans do kick up under heavy rendering, but it is a steady hum rather than a high-pitched whine. Another solid route is looking for a refurbished Apple MacBook Air M1 16GB RAM 512GB SSD or M2 with 16GB. You can sometimes find these within the $1000 budget on Apples official refurb site. The screens on the MacBooks are exceptionally color-accurate and the battery life is unmatched. For a design student, having 16GB of unified memory works well and ensures the laptop will actually last her through graduation without slowing to a crawl.

Im super satisfied with the ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 OLED 16GB RAM for design. That 100% DCI-P3 OLED panel works well for color accuracy and it keeps things snappy, honestly.
