So I just bought this new monitor on sale from Best Buy because it looked really pretty and the box said 1440p and 165hz. I thought okay cool my computer is only a few years old it should be fine but then I tried to play Cyberpunk and some other shooting games and it was like watching a slideshow lol. I guess my old card is too weak or something? I think its a 1060? Anyway I started looking at new ones and my head is spinning with all these numbers and letters. Nvidia and AMD and TI and Super... what does any of that even mean?? I'm basically a total beginner with this stuff so please explain it like I'm five years old haha.
I have about $650-$700 saved up from my birthday and some work shifts and I really want to actually use the 165hz thing I paid for. People say high refresh makes it smooth but mine is definitely not smooth right now it feels like I am playing through mud. I just want to play games on high settings without it lagging or looking blurry or crashing my whole computer.
Heres what I'm looking for:
Is the 4070 good? Or should I get the 7800 thing from the other company? I heard one of them has better lighting stuff called ray tracing but I dont even know if I need that or if it just makes the game slower. Honestly I just want it to work when I plug it in. Sorry if this is a super basic question I just dont want to waste my money on the wrong thing and then have to deal with returning it. Do I need a new power box too? My current one says 600w on the side. This is all way more complicated than I thought it would be...
Yeah trying to run Cyberpunk at 1440p on a 1060 is basically a recipe for disaster lol. Honestly the market is kinda frustrating right now because prices are still so high. I actually tried the base 4070 a while back and unfortunately it was not as good as expected for high refresh stuff, felt a bit underpowered for the price. Since you have a Micro Center nearby you should definitely grab the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X. Its much faster than the regular version and fits your budget perfectly. If you want raw speed and dont care about the fancy lighting, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6 is a beast, though I have had issues with their drivers being flaky in the past which sucks. One big heads up tho... that 600w power supply might struggle. You probably need something like a Corsair RM750e 750W 80 Plus Gold Modular or you might deal with crashes.
^ This. Also, definitely keep an eye on that power supply! I had a total nightmare experience where my pc kept blacking out because I pushed my old unit too hard. It was so scary lol. I absolutely love the ASRock Challenger Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB tho! It handles 1440p like a total dream and is seriously amazing for the price. Just make sure your 600w unit has the right cables!
@Reply #1 - good point! The base model is definitely underwhelming for the price. Since you're near Micro Center, check out these amazing upgrades:
