I'm trying to figure out which card to get for my new monitor but I'm really struggling with all the names and numbers they use. I just bought this 1440p screen from Best Buy because it was on sale but I didn't realize my computer wouldn't be able to handle it so now everything is super laggy when I try to play games. I have a $500 budget for a new graphics card and I need to buy it by Friday because I have a long weekend coming up.
I was looking at the Nvidia 4060 ti because I thought higher numbers meant it was faster but then I saw people saying the AMD 7800 XT is actually better for the price? I have no idea if that's true or if AMD cards even work the same way. My logic was just to buy the most expensive thing under five hundred dollars but then I started reading about VRAM and memory buses and it just makes my brain hurt. Is there one specific card that everyone agrees is the best for this? I just want to play my games on high settings without the whole thing crashing or stuttering all the time...
Honestly, go with the 7800 XT. In my experience, Nvidia cards in that price range like the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti 8GB GDDR6 just dont have enough VRAM for 1440p anymore. I've tried many cards over the years and AMD is usually the better value for raw frames when you're on a strict budget. The AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB GDDR6 is basically the king of 1440p under 500 bucks right now. It has 16GB of VRAM which is way better for high settings so you wont get those annoying stutters you mentioned. Nvidia has some cool features like DLSS but for pure performance and longevity at your resolution, AMD is the move. It just handles the heavy lifting better. I'm around all day if you need help picking a specific brand like Sapphire or PowerColor tho.
