My old trusty GTX 1060 finally started artifacting yesterday which is a total bummer because I was right in the middle of a marathon session. Ive been building rigs for like ten years now but the current mid-range market is honestly kind of a mess with all these vram debates going on.

I just want something solid for 1080p that can hit high settings without breaking a sweat or my wallet. I've got about $250 to spend maybe $300 if it's really worth it but I'm looking to buy this week. Should I just grab an RX 6600 or is there something better in that price bracket I missed...

Honestly, you might want to consider the AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT 12GB if you find a sale near $300. Be careful with your PSU headroom tho, it pulls about 250W compared to your old 120W card. I would suggest the AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT 8GB as a minimum for solid 1080p high settings, those extra memory clocks actually matter here.

Man, RIP to that 1060. Honestly, that card was the goat for so long. I remember building a secondary rig for my brother back in 2017 with one of those and it just wouldnt quit until the fan literally fell off a year ago. Seeing those artifacts is like losing an old friend. If youre looking to spend under 300 bucks right now, I've played around with a bunch of these recently for client builds. In my experience, the market is weird right now but there are some clear winners for 1080p high settings.

  • AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT 8GB GDDR6: This is basically the sweet spot for pure 1080p right now. I put one in a build last month and it crushed everything I threw at it. Its a noticeable step up from the base 6600 and usually sits around $240.
  • AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT 12GB GDDR6: If you can find this for $299 on sale, just buy it. The 12GB of vram makes a massive difference for high texture packs. Over the years I've realized that skimping on vram always bites you later, and this card handles 1080p like its nothing.
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 8GB GDDR6: If you really want the green team features like DLSS 3 or you care about power draw, this is the one. Its insanely efficient. Tbh though, the 8gb vram feels a bit stingy for the price compared to what AMD offers in this bracket. Id personally grab that 6750 XT if you can find it under 300... really worth it for the longevity compared to the 8gb cards.
