Does anyone know what the best website for a shared Christmas wish list is? I really need to get this set up by Sunday because my whole family of 12 is doing our Secret Santa draw and everyone is bugging me for links. I looked at Elfster but honestly the layout is so cluttered with ads it drives me crazy and I read that Giftster forces everyone to make an account just to view a list which is a total dealbreaker because my 80 year old grandma will never figure that out. Is there something simpler that just lets people claim items without a bunch of logins? Please help i'm running out of time...
Unfortunately most list sites have really gone downhill lately. I had issues with privacy on a few and they honestly arent as good as expected anymore. For your grandma, WishList.com is probably the most reliable pick since it lets people claim items without needing an account. Its not perfect and feels a bit dated, but at least it isnt a cluttered mess like Elfster. Just keep things simple.
> I looked at Elfster but honestly the layout is so cluttered with ads it drives me crazy and I read that Giftster forces everyone to make an account Coming back to this, I totally get the frustration. In my experience over the years, the biggest hurdle for any family gift exchange is the barrier to entry. If someone has to remember a password just to see what you want, they just wont do it. I have tried almost every platform out there, from the big ones you mentioned to obscure niche sites, and most of them are honestly terrible for older folks. I have been using GiftHero lately for our holiday swaps. It is way cleaner than Elfster and doesnt bombard you with those weird side-bar ads that look like real content. The technical side is much better too... it allows you to just share a link. Another one I have had luck with is Wishlist.com but specifically their guest features. One thing to watch for: some sites claim to be no login but then they track cookies so aggressively that if Grandma accidentally closes her browser, she loses her spot or cant see what she already claimed. I honestly think a simplified tool like CheckedOff is the way to go if you want zero fluff. It is basically just a list where people tick boxes. Simple, direct, and no account hurdles for the non-tech-savvy people in the group. Stick to your guns on the no-account rule, it saves so much headache on Christmas morning.
Regarding what #2 said about how cluttered these sites get, you're spot on. It makes the whole process feel like a chore instead of something fun. I had a moment to think about this more and it honestly reminds me of when my cousin tried to host our entire family exchange on a private server he built in his basement. He spent months on it but then his cat knocked over a glass of water on the hardware right before the draw. We ended up having to do the entire thing via a group text that lasted six hours and half the people forgot who they even picked by the next morning. Total disaster. A few things to keep in mind for costs and setup tho:
