How do I share a holiday wishlist without revealing bought items?

So I have been organizing our family holiday gift exchange for literally a decade now. Usually I just set up a shared Google Sheet or use Elfster and it goes fine. But this year is turning into a total nightmare and I am honestly getting so anxious about ruining Christmas morning for everyone.

We have about 15 family members spread out across the US and Canada, and everyone wants to use a single platform. The issue is that last year, we had a major spoiler incident because a UI glitch on the app we used showed my sister exactly what her husband bought her from her own list. Then, on the flip side, my aunt and mom bought my brother the exact same boots because they couldnt see what had already been claimed.

I need a solid platform that actually works without these leaks. Here is what we need:

  • Absolute spoiler prevention for the list owner. They should not be able to see if an item is marked as purchased, even if they log in from a different browser or click around the settings.
  • Clear claimed or purchased indicators for everyone else visiting the list so we avoid duplicate buys.
  • Super easy interface because my 74-year-old grandma needs to use it on her old iPad without calling me every five minutes.
  • Ability to add items from any website, not just locked into Amazon or Target.

I have a budget of maybe ten bucks if there is a premium version that guarantees this, but free is obviously better. We need this set up before Thanksgiving so people can start shopping early.

Are there any specific registry or wishlist sites you guys have used recently that handle this permissions stuff perfectly? I am terrified of another double-gift situation or spoiling the big surprises...

TL;DR: Giftster works well for hiding purchases. You might want to consider Giftster. It hides the bought status from the owner by default, but be careful and test it with a dummy account first to make sure grandma doesn't get confused by the interface. Honestly, Share Product Wishlist is way better than just sending a messy text list to the family.

Yes! Giftster is amazing for this. Another killer option is GiftHero because its database updates instantly, so there is literally zero lag or double-buy glitches for grandma!

Late to the party but I wanted to throw in my two cents since I have been managing our huge family exchange for years. You definitely do not need to spend any money to get these features. Here are a few budget-friendly, practical tips based on my experience:

  • Try Wishupon. It is completely free, has a super clean layout that even my tech-challenged relatives can navigate, and hides purchased items from the list creator by default.
  • Set up a buddy system. Have one tech-savvy cousin double-check the claimed status list once a week just in case grandma clicks the wrong button.
  • Avoid any platform that forces a paid premium tier just for basic privacy features. Free options are plenty reliable if you keep the settings simple. Save your ten bucks for stocking stuffers! Let me know if you need help setting it up.
