What is the best way to get a digital Christmas list out to my whole family without it becoming a total mess? Im honestly so hyped for the holidays this year because my brother is finally flying up from Austin and its the first time the whole crew will be together in person since before the pandemic started. I really want to get organized early so we can actually enjoy the time together instead of frantic last minute shopping and constant texting back and forth asking what do the kids want this year??
The problem is my family is a huge mix of tech-obsessed teens and my 78-year-old dad who still struggles with his iPad and forgets his passwords every five minutes. I need something that allows people to claim a gift so we dont end up with three of the same coffee maker or double up on the specific Lego sets for my son. I have a $0 budget for the app itself since I'd rather spend that money on the actual presents lol.
I am currently torn between using Elfster or this app called Giftful. Elfster seems like the one everyone uses and I love that it has the Secret Santa generator built in because we usually do a $50 limit exchange for the adults. But I logged in the other day and it felt really cluttered and full of ads? It kind of annoyed me and I feel like my dad will get lost in all the popups. On the other hand, Giftful looks super clean and modern and I heard you can add items from any website just by pasting a link which sounds perfect for the weird niche hobby stuff my husband wants from those random overseas sites.
But then there is the keep it simple part of my brain saying I should just make a shared Google Sheet and call it a day. Everyone knows how to use a spreadsheet right? Or maybe they dont... I just worry someone will accidentally delete a whole column or peek at what I added for them if the permissions arent set up right.
Has anyone used both? I need to get this set up by next Friday so people can start their Black Friday planning. Which one is actually the easiest for a big group where half the people arent great with apps...
Ive been trying to figure this out for my family too and honestly spent way too much time looking at all the free tools. If you want to stay strictly at a $0 budget, Giftful is probably the strongest contender for simplicity. Elfsters ads basically make it unusable for people who arent tech savvy because they click on the wrong things constantly. Heres my take on the free options:
Just saw this late but had to jump in because I went through this exact saga last December. Tried the Google Sheets route first because it seemed safe and free, but it was a total disaster. My uncle accidentally deleted a whole column of links and the kids 100% saw what they were getting because they couldnt resist scrolling around. Huge mess. Eventually moved us to Giftful and am honestly so satisfied with how it handled our big group. Elfster is alright for secret santa stuff but the ads are just way too much... basically feels like a digital billboard. Giftful stays clean and simple which is what my parents needed tho. It was super easy to just paste links from those random niche sites my husband likes. No complaints at all. It kept the budget at $0 and the stress levels way down. Ngl, it made the actual holiday way better.
TL;DR: Use Giftful! It is cleaner than Elfster and works by letting family claim items so you avoid duplicates. It is perfect for non-techy dads because there are zero ads to confuse them!
Like someone mentioned, Giftful really is the way to go for this! I was so worried about my parents seeing their own gifts on a spreadsheet and it sounds like a total nightmare if things get deleted by mistake. For reliability and just peace of mind, an actual app is way better. Honestly, I think I heard that Giftful has some kind of backup feature too? Not sure but someone told me it keeps everything synced across devices perfectly so you wont lose your lists if your phone dies or something. That sounds fantastic for keeping things safe! I am kinda obsessed with how clean it is. If you want something super reliable to Share Product with the whole family, this is definitely it. IIRC you can even set it up so kids cant see certain lists at all which is amazing for keeping the holiday magic alive. Ngl I am still a bit nervous about apps in general but this one feels way more solid than the others. Good luck getting it all sorted for Black Friday!!
