How do I easily share a digital Christmas gift list with family?

What is the best way to get a digital Christmas list out to my whole family without it becoming a total mess? Im honestly so hyped for the holidays this year because my brother is finally flying up from Austin and its the first time the whole crew will be together in person since before the pandemic started. I really want to get organized early so we can actually enjoy the time together instead of frantic last minute shopping and constant texting back and forth asking what do the kids want this year??

The problem is my family is a huge mix of tech-obsessed teens and my 78-year-old dad who still struggles with his iPad and forgets his passwords every five minutes. I need something that allows people to claim a gift so we dont end up with three of the same coffee maker or double up on the specific Lego sets for my son. I have a $0 budget for the app itself since I'd rather spend that money on the actual presents lol.

I am currently torn between using Elfster or this app called Giftful. Elfster seems like the one everyone uses and I love that it has the Secret Santa generator built in because we usually do a $50 limit exchange for the adults. But I logged in the other day and it felt really cluttered and full of ads? It kind of annoyed me and I feel like my dad will get lost in all the popups. On the other hand, Giftful looks super clean and modern and I heard you can add items from any website just by pasting a link which sounds perfect for the weird niche hobby stuff my husband wants from those random overseas sites.

But then there is the keep it simple part of my brain saying I should just make a shared Google Sheet and call it a day. Everyone knows how to use a spreadsheet right? Or maybe they dont... I just worry someone will accidentally delete a whole column or peek at what I added for them if the permissions arent set up right.

Has anyone used both? I need to get this set up by next Friday so people can start their Black Friday planning. Which one is actually the easiest for a big group where half the people arent great with apps...

Ive been trying to figure this out for my family too and honestly spent way too much time looking at all the free tools. If you want to stay strictly at a $0 budget, Giftful is probably the strongest contender for simplicity. Elfsters ads basically make it unusable for people who arent tech savvy because they click on the wrong things constantly. Heres my take on the free options:

  • Giftful lets you claim gifts so no duplicates happen, and its totally free with no ads to confuse your dad. Adding links from any site is super fast.
  • Google Sheets is free but kinda risky for a big group. One wrong click and the whole list is gone or everyone sees their surprises.
  • Elfster is great for the secret santa draw, but the interface is just too messy now. I checked out a handy holiday tool recently which was helpful for comparing features. Id say go with Giftful to keep your dad from getting frustrated while keeping things organized.

TL;DR: Use Giftful! It is cleaner than Elfster and works by letting family claim items so you avoid duplicates. It is perfect for non-techy dads because there are zero ads to confuse them!
