Which is the best silent PSU for a quiet office?

I’m currently building a workstation for my home office, and since I spend 8+ hours a day here, I really need it to be as quiet as possible. I’m looking for a PSU that won't have that annoying coil whine or a loud fan curve. I’ve been looking at some 650W-750W units with a 'zero RPM' or 'hybrid' mode, but I’m worried about how they sound once the fan actually kicks in under load. My budget is around $150, and I’d prefer something with an 80 Plus Gold or Platinum rating for better efficiency. Does anyone have experience with a specific model that stays truly silent during productivity tasks?

For your situation, safety and longevity are honestly just as important as the noise. I learned the hard way that cheaping out leads to coil whine, which is basically a sign of low-quality components vibrating under stress.

1. Look for units with Japanese capacitors; they handle heat better without the fan needing to blast.
2. Over-spec your wattage. If you only need 500W, getting a 750W unit keeps it in the 'silent' fan curve longer.
3. Check for Cybenetics A or A+ noise ratings... they're way more reliable than just 80 Plus ratings tbh.

Just caught up with the thread. Tbh, I used to be the guy trying to DIY silence by swapping PSU fans for Noctuas, but it’s honestly not worth the risk of getting shocked or voiding ur warranty. These days, I just look for units with high-quality FDB bearings because they dont have that clicking sound some cheap ball-bearing fans get. If u want a specific recommendation, I’ve had great luck with the be quiet! Straight Power 12 750W. Instead of a hybrid mode that constantly toggles on and off (which can be super annoying if the threshold is right where ur PC idles), it just runs a Silent Wings fan at a super low constant RPM. I literally can’t hear it over my ambient room noise. Another solid DIY choice is the Fractal Design Ion+ 2 Platinum 760W. The cables are super flexible which makes the build way easier, and the fan curve is one of the most relaxed I’ve tested. Usually stays passive even during light rendering tasks in my experience. Both should be right around $130-$150 depending on where u shop.

Ok so, in my experience, I’d stick with Seasonic or Corsair. Honestly, I bought a cheaper unit last year and the coil whine was HORRIBLE, total waste of money tbh.

* Check if it has a physical hybrid button
* Look for 'Cybernetics' noise ratings

But realy, what GPU are you running?? And is your case restricted for airflow? Just wanna make sure the fan wont kick in constantly. gl!
