What is the best PSU for an RTX 4090 build?

So I finally saved up enough for my dream PC and I actually managed to get my hands on an RTX 4090 which was way more expensive than I thought it would be but now I am kind of stuck on the power part. I keep seeing people talk about PSUs and wattage and honestly I have no idea where to start because every time I google it I get even more confused with all these numbers and letters. Like I saw something about ATX 3.0 and then some people say I need 1000 watts but then other people are saying 1200 is safer so I am just sitting here staring at my cart and not clicking buy because I am scared of picking the wrong one.

My logic was that more is better right? But I dont want to blow my house up or something if I plug it in wrong. I saw those videos of the cables melting on the cards and that really freaked me out because this card cost me like two months of rent and I would probably cry if it broke. Is there a specific brand that is just the one for this? I was looking at Corsair or maybe EVGA but then I saw some stuff about Seasonic and now my head is spinning. I really dont want to use those adapter things if I can help it because they look messy and I heard they might be the reason for the melting stuff anyway so I want something that just plugs straight in.

I am going to Micro Center here in Chicago tomorrow morning and I really want to just walk in and know what to grab without the sales guy talking me into something I dont need. My budget for just the power box part is maybe 250 or 300 dollars if I really have to push it but I already spent so much on the GPU. Do I need to worry about the 80 plus gold or platinum stuff too? It feels like I need a degree just to turn this thing on. If someone could just tell me what they use for their 4090 and if it was easy to set up for a beginner that would be great because I am terrified of breaking this thing...

Honestly, just get an ATX 3.0 unit so you dont have to mess with those adapters. I have built enough rigs to know safety is everything when you are dropping two grand on a card. 1000W is plenty.

  • Corsair RM1000e 1000W 80+ Gold ATX 3.0
  • MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80+ Gold Gold rating is fine, dont waste cash on Platinum unless the price is the same.

Re: "OMG you finally got a 4090! That card..." - nice find. Montech is decent, but i'd check the Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 1000W 80+ Gold ATX 3.0 or Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1000W 80+ Gold ATX 3.0 instead.

OMG you finally got a 4090! That card is a total beast! I remember being so paranoid about my first big build that I actually used a multimeter on every rail lol. Since you are going to Micro Center, definitely grab the Montech Titan Gold 1000W 80+ Gold ATX 3.0. It is way cheaper than the big brands but the transients are amazing! Quick question tho, what CPU are you pairing with it? That really changes the wattage math!
