So I finally decided to move my home lab out of the closet and onto my desk because the closet was getting way too hot and honestly I just want to look at the pretty lights lol. But now I have a huge problem which is the noise. My current power supply sounds like a jet engine even when the server is just idling and its driving me crazy while I'm trying to work. I've been looking around and people keep mentioning the Seasonic Prime Fanless series but then I saw some reviews saying they can have really bad coil whine which would basically defeat the whole purpose of going fanless right? Like if I trade fan noise for a high pitched buzzing I'm gonna lose my mind.
I also looked at the Corsair RM750x because everyone says the fan doesnt even spin up until it hits a certain load but my server pulls about 150-200W constant so I'm worried it might just stay right on the edge where the fan kicks in and out constantly which is actually more annoying than a steady hum. Its that start-stop sound that really gets to me when I'm trying to focus on coding.
Here is what I am dealing with:
Does anyone actually have experience with these fanless units in a real world office setting? Is the Seasonic worth the premium or is there some hidden gem I missed that stays dead quiet under a light load? I was also looking at be quiet! brand but their naming scheme is super confusing and I cant tell which ones are actually silent vs just quiet-ish. Just want something that wont make me regret putting this thing on my desk...
Unfortunately fanless units usually have annoying coil whine. I moved to the be quiet! Straight Power 11 750W 80 Plus Platinum since its decoupled fan is actually quieter than the electric buzzing.
Man, I have been through exactly what you are going through! I spent way too much money trying to find the perfect silence and honestly, just go with any high-end Corsair unit. Their zero RPM mode is absolutely amazing for home office setups! You definitely want that feature because it is way better than going pure fanless. Honestly fanless units are a total gamble with that coil whine you mentioned and it is a complete nightmare when you are trying to code. With a high-wattage unit from them, that fan basically never turns on at a 200W load. It is fantastic! I have one sitting right next to my head and I forget it is even powered on half the time. Just make sure you grab one of their gold or platinum rated units to keep efficiency high. It makes a huge difference in heat, which keeps things silent. Seriously, you wont regret it! Just get a beefy one from them and you are gonna love it.
