Just snagged an RTX 4090 for my new editing rig and I am literally shaking with excitement lol. I've been saving up for months for this beast and want to build it this weekend.

I saw some people online swearing by the Corsair RM1200x but then I keep seeing others say the new ATX 3.0 units like the Seasonic Vertex are way better because of the native 12VHPWR cable. Is the adapter that comes in the box really as bad as the horror stories make it look?

I dont want to spend $300 if a $200 unit is just as safe. What PSU are you guys actually using for your 4090s?

To add to the point above: in my experience, native cables are superior. I've transitioned to Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1200W ATX 3.0. Tip: ensure the connector clicks firmly to avoid damage.

> native cables are superior Agree. Unfortunately, most 4090 units are way overpriced. Corsair RM1000e 1000W ATX 3.0 is a solid budget pick but loud. be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 1000W is way quieter tho.

Man, congrats on snagging a 4090! That thing is a total absolute beast of a card. I remember when I first got mine, I was so paranoid about the power connection thing too lol. Honestly, I have been using the MSI MPG A1000G PCIE5 1000W 80+ Gold for my editing rig and I am super satisfied with it. It comes with that native 12VHPWR cable so you dont have to mess around with those bulky 4-way adapters that look like a giant spider in your case. The horror stories about the adapters are mostly from people not plugging them in all the way, but having a single native cable just feels way more secure and it is much easier to manage for cable routing. If you want to save some cash and stay around that $200 mark, that MSI unit is a solid bet. I have had zero issues with power spikes or fan noise even when rendering heavy 4K timelines. If you got a bit more budget, the Seasonic Vertex GX-1000 1000W 80+ Gold is what my brother uses and he is really happy with it. Seasonic is basically the gold standard for reliability imo. Another really cool option is the Corsair RM1200x Shift 80+ Gold Fully Modular because the ports are on the side, making it way easier to reach things if you add drives later. Just definitely go for an ATX 3.0 unit tho... it just makes the whole building process so much smoother and less stressful for a first-time 40 series builder.
