Building a budget rig for my cousin with a $950 hard limit. Ive built plenty of high-end stuff but the mid-range market is a mess right now with all these cheap fire-hazard units. Need a reliable 600W 80 Plus Gold that wont blow the budget or the motherboard. Whats the best Tier B pick lately?

Be careful with off-brands, I learned the hard way when one killed my first build. I'd suggest the Cooler Master MWE Gold 750 V2 80+ Gold for a reliable, safe budget pick.

I've compared the Be Quiet Pure Power 11 600W 80 Plus Gold and EVGA SuperNova 650 GA 80 Plus Gold recently. The Be Quiet unit is silent, but the EVGA has better transient response. Both are solid.

Im happy with the one I got for a similar budget build.

  • Solid Japanese capacitors
  • 15ms hold-up time
  • Stable rails It worked well and didnt cause any headaches under high loads.

Caught this thread a bit late but felt like I had to weigh in because PSU safety is my hill to die on. Back in 2018, I tried to save $20 on a generic Gold unit for a friends rig, and three months later, the 12V rail spiked during a heavy session of Witcher 3. It didnt just die... it literally melted the plastic on the GPU power connector and fried the VRMs. Ever since then, im paranoid about what I put in budget builds. People get blinded by that 80 Plus sticker, but Gold just means it wastes less power, it doesnt mean the internal components wont fail and take your $400 GPU with it. You really should bookmark the Cultists Network PSU Tier List. Its basically the bible for builders now because they actually track which OEMs are cutting corners on capacitors. Here is what I usually look for to stay safe:

  • Look for units with a 7 or 10-year warranty, it shows the manufacturer trusts the platform.
  • Verify it has full OVP (Over Voltage Protection) and SCP (Short Circuit Protection).
  • Make sure the 12V rail is single and beefy for modern GPUs. I would suggest checking out the MSI MPG A650GF 650W 80 Plus Gold Full Modular. Its usually priced right for a $950 build and uses a very reliable CWT platform. Another solid bet is the Corsair RM650 650W 80 Plus Gold Fully Modular if you find a decent promo code. Both are Tier A and way safer than rolling the dice on a budget unit that might turn into a doorstop.
