Im trying to build my first computer and honestly I have no idea where to start with the power part. Its all so confusing with the different colors like gold and bronze and I am worried if I pick a cheap one it will like explode or something lol. I was told I need a 650W one for the graphics card I got which is a 3060. I dont have a ton of money left after buying the other parts so I am looking for something that wont break the bank but also wont kill my whole system.

Here is what I am looking for:

  • price needs to be under $75 if possible
  • needs to not be super loud because its going in my bedroom
  • has to be reliable enough to last a couple years
  • easy to plug in because I am scared of messing up the wires

I am shopping mostly on Amazon or maybe Best Buy since there is one near my house in Ohio. Is there a specific brand that is safe for beginners? I see some for $40 but that feels too cheap right? Sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask I just dont want to set my house on fire or ruin my new parts...

Dude you are totally fine!! Building is scary at first but you got this! I love the MSI MAG A650BN 650W 80 Plus Bronze for budget builds because its super solid and wont blow up lol.

  • Super quiet fan
  • Really cheap right now
  • Way better than those scary 40 dollar no-name ones! Its definitely my go-to for a 3060 build on a budget!

Just saw this thread and honestly i am so glad people are telling you to be careful!! Safety is absolutely the number one priority when you are picking a heart for your system! I totally agree with the previous posters about not going too cheap because a bad unit can literally fry every other component you worked so hard to buy. To make sure you are getting something fantastic and reliable, you should definitely check out some technical resources before you swipe your card. Here is how I usually vet my power supplies to stay safe:

  • Check the PSU Tier List on Cultists Network to see if a model is actually tested and rated well.
  • Look for units with at least a 5-year warranty because it shows the brand actually trusts their own hardware.
  • Use a wattage calculator like the one on OuterVision to be 100 percent sure 650W covers your build overhead. I love that you are taking this so seriously! It is way better to spend an extra twenty bucks now than to replace a whole GPU later. Doing your homework like this is how you end up with an amazing build that lasts for years. Good luck!!

Ive been building for a decade and you are right to be paranoid. Seen too many people fry their whole rig trying to save thirty bucks. If a 650W unit feels light as a feather, its basically a fire hazard.

  • Watch out for units with short warranties
  • Avoid anything without OVP or SCP protections Dont risk a $300 GPU just to save a tiny bit on the part that feeds it tho...
