Best 850W PSU for a high-end gaming setup?

I'm finally putting together my dream build with an RTX 4080 and an i9-13900K, and I've settled on 850W as the sweet spot for power. However, I’m overwhelmed by the sheer number of options out there. I really want something with at least an 80+ Gold rating that features solid Japanese capacitors for long-term reliability. Noise is also a huge factor for me, as I’d prefer a fan that stays silent under light loads. I've been looking at the Corsair RMx series and some EVGA units, but I'm curious if there's a better choice for cable management and stability. Between Tier A options, which specific 850W PSU would you trust most for a high-end rig?

Big if true

Honestly, for an RTX 4080 and that i9, I'd say the Corsair RM850x (2021) 850W 80+ Gold Fully Modular is your safest bet for a silent, reliable build.

I went through this last year. honestly, building with high-end parts like yours is lowkey stressful because you dont wanna fry anything. I was super excited for my build, but I actually had a pretty bad experience with an older unit that had terrible coil whine... it literally drove me crazy whenever I'd boot up a game.

I mean, I totally get the hype around the RMx series mentioned above, but I wanted to try something else for better cable management. I ended up grabbing the MSI MPG A850G PCIE5 850W 80+ Gold Fully Modular Power Supply because it already comes with the native 12VHPWR cable for the 40-series cards. It saved me from using those bulky adapters that look kinda messy tbh.

Quick tips for your rig:
* Look for ATX 3.0 compatible units so you dont have to mess with dongles for that 4080.
* Check the depth of the PSU; some high-end ones are longer and make tucking cables away a total nightmare.

I was also looking at the Seasonic FOCUS GX-850, 850W 80+ Gold, Full-Modular because their reputation is insane, but I was worried about the fan profile being too aggressive. Anyway, definitely take your time picking because swapping a PSU after everything is cable-managed is just... the worst lol. gl with the dream build!! 👍

Honestly, after building high-end rigs for over a decade, I have to respectfully disagree that 850W is the absolute sweet spot for a 13900K and 4080 combo. While it works on paper, you're cutting it a bit close for long-term component health and noise efficiency if you're pushing both the CPU and GPU to their limits. Transient power spikes on modern hardware can be pretty brutal for your VRMs and capacitors over time. Before settling on a specific tier A unit, I've got a couple of questions:

  • Do you plan on doing any heavy multi-threaded productivity tasks like video editing or rendering, or is this strictly for gaming?
  • Are you looking for a unit that adheres specifically to the ATX 3.0 standard with a native 12VHPWR cable, or are you okay using adapters? Tbh, i9 chips are incredibly power-hungry and being too conservative with your wattage overhead might lead to that fan noise you're trying to avoid once the system hits peak loads. It's always better to stay in that 50 to 60 percent load window for peak efficiency and silence.
