Im losing my mind trying to pick a board for this 13600K build. My budget is around 250 bucks max because I already blew a chunk of cash on the GPU, and I need this thing ready by next weekend since my current laptop is basically a paperweight that sounds like a jet engine. I was looking at the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk because everyone on Reddit swears by it, but then I read a bunch of threads about BIOS issues and memory stability problems with DDR5 and now Im just second guessing everything.
My logic was that a Z790 board would give me some headroom if I decide to OC later, even though I dont have much experience with that, but then someone else said just get a B760 and save the money. Does the B760 really handle the 13600K okay under load? I use the PC for some heavy video editing and gaming so I really dont want thermal throttling issues. Is it worth dealing with the extra Z790 cost or am I just paying for features I wont use? Really just need something that works out of the box so I can stop stressing...
Honestly, the MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI DDR5 is solid. Just update the BIOS right away. B760 boards are fine, but Z790 makes OCing way less of a headache later on.
If you want rock-solid stability without the Z790 headache, honestly look at the Gigabyte B760 AORUS MASTER DDR5 ATX Motherboard. I have used this board for several builds lately, and it handles the i5-13600K perfectly during long rendering sessions for video editing. In my experience, you are rarely going to see any thermal throttling because the VRM cooling is surprisingly beefy for a B-series chipset. Most people get talked into Z790 boards for overclocking benefits they never actually use. Unless you are chasing extreme benchmarks, the power phase design on this model is more than enough to maintain boost clocks under sustained loads. Plus, you save a decent chunk of change for more RAM or a faster NVMe drive. It just works out of the box so you can start working instead of troubleshooting BIOS settings.
Forget the B760 if you want stability. Grab the ASUS TUF Gaming Z790-PLUS WiFi DDR5. It handles power delivery way better than budget boards for video editing under heavy sustained loads.
