so my brother helped me pick out parts for a new pc build and he told me to get the intel i9 14900k processor. honestly it looks super fast and way more than i need since im mostly just gonna be playing cyberpunk and doing some video editing for my youtube channel. my budget for the whole thing is around 2500 bucks and im hoping to order everything by this weekend. anyway the problem is i went online to look for a motherboard and my brain completely melted. there are z790 boards and b790 wait no b760 boards and prices range from like 150 dollars to over 700 and i have no idea what any of the letters mean. some have wifi and some dont and some say ddr5 and some say ddr4. i dont want to accidentally buy something cheap that slows down my expensive cpu or waste money on features ill never use like water cooling ports. what is actually the best motherboard to get for this chip if i just want it to work right out of the box without me having to update bios stuff that looks super complicated?
man i felt the exact same way when i built my rig last year. motherboard shopping is genuinely overwhelming with all those random letters and massive price tags. tbh the 14900k runs super hot so you really need something with solid power delivery otherwise itll thermal throttle right out of the gate. since you want something that just works without messing around with bios flashback stuff right away, look for a board with a strong out-of-the-box bios and good vrm cooling. i went through three different boards before settling on the ASUS ROG Strix Z790-E Gaming WiFi II because it gave me zero headaches during setup. here are a few things you actually need to keep in mind:
Quick reply while I have a sec... mobo shopping is definitely a headache with the 14900K since it pulls so much power. You definitely want a Z790 board to fully unlock that cpu, but you dont need to spend 500 bucks on a extreme tier board either. Look for something with decent VRM heatsinks and make sure it explicitly says DDR5 since you want to match modern speeds for video editing. Here are a few solid data points to consider for your budget:
