sorry if this is a super dumb question but im trying to upgrade my pc and i am completely lost. my friend gave me an old ryzen cpu and said i need an am4 motherboard for it. my budget is like 80 to 100 bucks max cause im just trying to play sims and maybe some light rocket league with my kid on weekends in our tiny apartment living room. im in ohio if that even matters lol. looking online gives me a headache with all these different letters and chipsets like b450 or a520 and i honestly have no idea what the difference is or what is actually gonna work without me having to update the bios or whatever that is. like do I just buy the cheapest one on amazon or are some of them garbage? what is the best am4 motherboard for a total beginner who just wants something stable that wont catch fire?
nah dont apologize, pc stuff is super overwhelming when youre just trying to get something running for weekend gaming. honestly id stay away from the absolute cheapest no-name boards on amazon cause ive had issues with cheap power delivery failing and basically frying components in the past. not great for peace of mind. for a simple sims and rocket league setup, look for a decent b450 board that wont break the bank. something like the ASRock B450M Pro4 AM4 is usually around 80 bucks and its honestly a little tank. its super stable and wont give you headaches. just make sure you check the box if you buy local or read the listing carefully so you dont end up with one thats missing backplates or something. unfortunately a lot of older boards might need a bios update depending on what ryzen cpu your friend handed you, which is super annoying for a beginner. if you want to avoid that totally, look for boards that explicitly say ryzen 5000 desktop ready on the packaging, or grab an a520 board like the Gigabyte A520M DS3H AM4 which usually comes with newer bios out of the box and sits right in your budget. stay safe and good luck with the build man!
