I'm upgrading my setup to include the AMD Ryzen 7 7700X and require a motherboard that supports USB4 for enhanced connectivity. Other important features include PCIe 5.0 support, multiple M.2 slots, and reliable BIOS updates. I'm also interested in compatibility with Thunderbolt devices. What motherboards would you recommend that meet these criteria, and what has been your experience with their performance and compatibility?
For a Ryzen 7 7700X build prioritizing USB4 and PCIe 5.0, the X670 chipset is your best bet. The ASUS Prime X670-P WiFi offers three M.2 slots, USB4, and generally good BIOS support.
Checking back in on this... honestly, USB4 is a premium feature that usually drives the price way up. If youre trying to be cost-conscious but still need that PCIe 5.0 support, I’d suggest looking at B650E boards rather than going full X670E. You get most of the same high-end features for a lot less cash, right? A couple of solid value picks:
- ASRock B650E Taichi Lite: Basically the flagship Taichi without the fancy armor. It's got USB4 and great VRMs for the 7700X.
- Gigabyte B650E AORUS MASTER: Great connectivity and usually easier on the wallet than the ASUS stuff. Just make sure you check if the USB4 is native or via a header tho. Sometimes you gotta buy an extra add-in card which is a total pain!!!
