What laptop should I actually buy for computer science because honestly Im so lost right now. Sorry if this is a super dumb question but there are just way too many options and I dont know what I need. Im starting my degree in September and my parents said they can chip in up to 1200 bucks but thats gotta cover everything. I just need something that wont die halfway through a coding project or whatever. Does it need a ton of memory? Or a special graphics card? Everyone keeps using jargon I dont get and its just really stressing me out... is a MacBook better or should I stick to Windows?

Saw this earlier but just now getting to a keyboard. Honestly, dont overthink the GPU thing. I went through half my degree on a machine with integrated graphics and survived just fine. Just be careful with storage space. You might want to consider grabbing something like the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 16GB RAM 512GB SSD if you can find it on sale. It usually hits that sweet spot for price. If you go with Windows, make sure to check if you can upgrade the RAM later, because soldering it down is a major pain if you end up needing more headroom down the line. I remember my first semester, my laptop fan sounded like a jet engine during a basic Java compile, so prioritize good cooling if you can. Dont stress, you will be totally fine.

Honestly, dont sweat the specs too much. You dont need a fancy graphics card unless you plan on doing heavy game dev or machine learning stuff, which you can usually just do on the school computers anyway. In my experience, a solid processor and at least 16GB of RAM is the sweet spot for smooth coding. Since you have that 1200 budget, here is what I would look at:

  • Apple MacBook Air M2 8-core CPU 16GB RAM 256GB SSD
  • It is honestly the gold standard for students. Battery life is insane and it handles code like a champ.
  • Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 Ryzen 7 16GB RAM 512GB SSD
  • If you prefer Windows, this keyboard is a dream for long nights typing up scripts. Stick to at least 16GB RAM and you will be fine.
