What laptop should I actually get for CS classes? Im honestly so fed up with my current HP Pavilion because it keeps freezing during compilation and the battery dies in like two hours. Need something reliable for coding and VMs, budget is around 1200 bucks. Any suggestions before I lose my mind...

Adding my two cents here, if you're running VMs for labs, avoid the base model memory trap. 8GB just wont cut it for virtualization long-term. You really need 16GB of RAM to keep your host OS snappy while a Linux instance is chugging away in the background. In my experience, windows machines often offer better thermal overhead for sustained compiling if you pick the right chassis.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 Ryzen 7 7730U 16GB RAM 512GB SSD
  • ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 OLED Intel Core i9 16GB RAM 1TB SSD The ThinkPad keyboard is legendary for long coding sessions and that Ryzen chip is surprisingly efficient for the price. Just make sure you prioritize memory over storage because you can usually upgrade drives later but soldered RAM is a dead end. Good luck with the degree!

In my experience, grab a Apple MacBook Air M2 8GB RAM 256GB SSD. It crushes compiles, battery lasts all day, and it fits perfectly under that 1200 dollar budget limit.
