So I am honestly just done with my old Acer Nitro. It is thermal throttling every single time I open anything more demanding than Minesweeper and the fans sound like a jet engine taking off in my bedroom its actually driving me insane. I tried repasting it and cleaning the dust but nothing works anymore so I am ready to just trash it and start fresh.

My budget is strictly under 1500 bucks since I am a student and thats basically all my savings from my summer job. I have been looking at the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro because people say the build quality is solid but then I saw some deals on the ASUS Zephyrus G14 and now I am just confused. My logic was that the G14 is portable for classes but I am worried it will just overheat like my current piece of junk.

I mainly want to play stuff like Cyberpunk and the new Elden Ring DLC without it turning into a slide show or burning my thighs off. Is there anything else I should be looking at or is the Legion basically the king right now? I need to buy this within the next week because my current laptop literally shut down twice today during a match and I am losing my mind over here...

^ This. Also, in my experience, the jump from a budget chassis like the Nitro to a more dedicated performance line makes a massive difference in how long the hardware actually lasts. I've tried many different setups over the years and learned the hard way that a higher spec on paper doesnt mean much if the cooling system cant handle the TGP. Basically, you should look at the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 Intel Core i7-13700HX RTX 4060. Even though it shares the same parent brand as your old one, the internal build quality is on another level. I switched to a similar Predator model after my old rig started thermal throttling, and the thermal headroom is just way better. The cooling assembly is much thicker, and it uses liquid metal instead of standard paste. It handles games like Cyberpunk way better than the slim portables because it has the physical space to move air. It fits right into that student budget too.

I have been through quite a few gaming laptops over the years and honestly, the Legion is usually the safer bet if you are worried about heat. Small laptops like the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 AMD Ryzen 9 16GB RAM RTX 4060 are great for carrying to class but they definitely run hotter because there is just less room for airflow. If you want a machine that actually lasts, prioritizing cooling over portability is a more conservative and logical move for a student on a budget. The Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16 inch QHD 165Hz Ryzen 7 16GB RAM RTX 4070 is currently one of the most reliable options under your 1500 budget. It has a much better thermal design than the Nitro series you are coming from. Another solid choice that often goes on sale is the HP Omen 16 Intel Core i7 16GB RAM RTX 4060. It is a bit bulky but it stays cool and wont throttle during heavy sessions of Elden Ring. Stick with the Legion if you can find a good deal tho... its basically the safest pick for reliability right now.
