im finally building my first high end rig in years and im super hyped for 1440p high refresh gaming!! i read that the rtx 4070 super is the value king but people keep saying 12gb vram isnt enough for the future which has me worried. then i saw the 7900 gre is cheaper but im not sure about losing dlss for stuff like cyberpunk.

here is my setup:

  • budget is $600-$700 tops
  • need to hit 144fps for space marine 2 and shooters
  • buying everything next week in time for my bday
  • mostly play aaa titles and some competitive stuff

which card actually holds up best for 1440p without dying in two years?

@Reply #2 - good point! Been building rigs for a decade and I finally settled on the ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6 for my latest project. Its fantastic! Ngl, the 16gb VRAM is a total lifesaver for 1440p textures. Quick tip: definitely turn on Smart Access Memory in your BIOS... its a free performance uplift for these cards. Youre gonna have a blast with the new build!

Listen, if you are hitting that $700 ceiling for your bday build, you should seriously check out the Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB GDDR6. It is a total beast for 1440p! I know you are worried about losing DLSS for stuff like Cyberpunk, but honestly, at 1440p the raw power of the 7900 XT is so high that you might not even need upscaling for most shooters. Having 20GB of VRAM is literally insane at this price point and it guarantees this card wont be obsolete in two years. It's gonna crush Space Marine 2! The ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB is definitely the go-to value pick for Nvidia fans, but yeah, that 12GB buffer is a bit tight for the long haul. I have seen modern titles already creeping up to 11GB at 1440p ultra settings. Since you mentioned the Gigabyte Gaming OC Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB, it is an amazing value, but with a $700 budget, the XT model is a massive step up in performance. For your specific goals of hitting 144fps in shooters, the 7900 XT is just a much better tier of card. It provides way more breathing room for future AAA games that are definitely gonna be VRAM hungry. Definitely treat yourself to the extra power for your birthday, you wont regret it!

Totally get the VRAM anxiety! I went through a massive internal crisis last month trying to decide between these same cards for my new 1440p monitor. I actually started with the MSI Ventus 3X GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12GB GDDR6X because i absolutely love DLSS. Honestly, Frame Gen is like magic in Cyberpunk... it makes everything feel so buttery smooth even with ray tracing on. But then i started playing some heavily modded titles and saw the memory usage hitting 11gb and it freaked me out lol. I ended up returning it for the ASRock Steel Legend AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6. Here is how they stack up from my experience:

  • RTX 4070 Super: Best features hands down. DLSS 3.5 is way ahead of FSR in terms of image quality. If you want ray tracing, this is the one.
  • RX 7900 GRE: Best peace of mind. That extra 4GB of VRAM is huge for future titles. It crushed every shooter I threw at it with insane frame rates. If you can stretch that budget by like fifty bucks, the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB GDDR6X is basically the dream card since it has the 16GB and the Nvidia goodies. But if $700 is a hard wall, i really think the 7900 GRE is the way to go for longevity. Youll be so stoked with the performance either way tho! Happy early birthday!
