My current 1070 is finally dying and I need a replacement for 1440p gaming asap. I looked at the 4070 Super but people keep arguing about VRAM limits for the future. My budget is around 600 bucks and I am in the US. Should I pull the trigger now or is there something better coming?

TL;DR: Skip the 12GB cards. If you want longevity, go for the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X is just disappointing value.

Honestly, the whole VRAM anxiety is real, but I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it unless you are trying to play everything on ultra settings with mods. I swapped my old card for a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X a few months back and it handles 1440p without breaking a sweat. It is super efficient with power too, which saved me from needing a new PSU. If you want to be safe and save a few bucks, you could also look at:

  • AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT 16GB GDDR6 if you want that extra memory cushion for cheap.
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 12GB GDDR6X if you find a sale and dont mind missing out on the Super boost. Im kinda cautious about upgrading right this second because prices shift so fast, but if your 1070 is dying, waiting is basically just torturing yourself. I spent weeks staring at benchmarks before I finally pulled the trigger. At the end of the day, any of these cards are gonna feel like a massive jump from the 1070. Just grab something that fits your budget and dont overthink the future-proofing too much, because by the time 12GB is actually obsolete, we will probably all be looking at different hardware anyway. Good luck with the hunt!

Honestly, 12GB of VRAM on the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X is underwhelming for longevity, which is disappointing for the price. I had issues with textures in recent titles.

  • The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE 16GB GDDR6 is much better value with more VRAM.
  • Unfortunately, nothing revolutionary is dropping soon. Grab the 7900 GRE and save your sanity.
