Is it actually possible to find a decent 4K video editing GPU right now without completely breaking the bank or am I just dreaming? Im so sick of my current timeline lagging every time I try to drop in some basic 4K footage from my Sony a7IV. Seriously ready to throw my whole PC out the window. Im trying to decide between the RTX 4070 Super and the RX 7900 XT since my absolute hard limit is like 700 bucks max, though Id prefer to spend less if I can. Mostly working in Premiere Pro with some After Effects thrown in for motion graphics, plus I edit weddings and short docs so render times actually matter a lot for my deadlines. Im leaning toward the Nvidia card because of CUDA stuff and better export speeds, but people keep telling me the VRAM on the AMD card is way better for high res stuff. My case is a mid-tower so space isnt really an issue, but I need something that wont overheat rendering a 45-minute ceremony. Which one should I actually buy before I lose my mind...

Quick reply while I grab some coffee... I totally feel your pain with the Sony 4K footage lagging, that timeline stutter is the absolute worst when deadlines are looming. Since you are using Premiere and After Effects, stick with Nvidia. Trust me on that one. But honestly, you might want to consider saving a little cash instead of maxing out your budget.

  • Look into the PNY GeForce RTX 4070 12GB if you want to keep costs down closer to six hundred bucks. It still handles 4K rendering really well.
  • Make sure your power supply can actually handle the upgrade before you install anything. Dont want random crashes halfway through rendering a 45-minute wedding ceremony.
  • Watch out for clearance deals on older stock too. Sometimes you can snag a previous gen card for a steal. I would suggest grabbing the ASUS TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB OC Edition if you can find it near the bottom of your price range. The triple-fan cooler on that specific model keeps temps super low even during heavy exports, so you wont have to worry about thermal throttling when you are pushing it hard. Just be careful with physical card length since some of those TUF coolers are massive, though most mid-towers swallow them up fine.

Drop the AMD thought right now if youre using Premiere! You gotta grab the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB instead. CUDA acceleration makes a massive difference for timeline playback with Sony 4K files.

  • Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super 12GB: Amazing render speeds, rock-solid drivers, handles After Effects like a dream.
  • AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT 20GB: Great raw VRAM, but Premiere just runs better on Nvidia. Save your sanity and go Team Green!

Honestly I switched to the PNY GeForce RTX 4070 Ti 12GB last year and rendering 4K wedding timelines stopped being a nightmare. The CUDA cores just eat Premiere for breakfast tbh.
