Im trying to build a new gaming rig for my kid in time for his birthday next month and im strictly capped at 500 bucks for the whole tower. ive been obsessively reading reddit threads and everyone keeps suggesting the 5600 but then i see others saying the 5500 is basically the same thing if you dont care about pcie 4.0. honestly im just confused if that performance difference is actually noticeable for casual 1080p gaming or if i should just save the extra cash for a better gpu. does anyone have a recommendation for an amd chip that hits that sweet spot for a budget build without breaking the bank?

It still holds its own for casual 1080p gaming and leaves way more room in the budget for a decent card. In my experience, pairing that with a budget board like the ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Motherboard really saves the day when every dollar matters. The PCIe 4.0 support matters more than people think when you start looking at modern budget GPUs that only use 8 lanes.

The 5500 is technically okay but the halved cache and PCIe 3.0 limit can cause stutters in some newer titles.
