Ive been building rigs since the FX days so usually I know whats up but man the current market is tripping me out. Im helping my younger cousin in Austin put something together by next weekend and were looking at about a $200 limit for the processor alone.

I was dead set on the Ryzen 5 5600 because its the gold standard for cheap builds but then I saw some deals on the 7600 and it got me thinking if the jump to AM5 is finally worth the extra cash for the mobo and ddr5. Im really stoked to get him into PC gaming but i dont want to pick a dead platform if I can help it. Which AMD chip is actually the best bang for your buck right now?

I would suggest the AMD Ryzen 5 7600 3.8GHz 6-Core. Be careful tho:

  • AM5 boards cost more
  • DDR5 is pricey I'd double check the total kit price first.

Honestly, if youre looking at that $200 ceiling and want the most performance possible for your cousin, the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D 8-Core 3.0GHz is currently the technical sweet spot for AM4 builds. While AM5 is the future, the platform cost jump for a decent B650 board and 32GB of DDR5 usually eats another $100-150 that could go toward a better GPU. Heres a few reasons why sticking with Zen 3 might actually be smarter for this specific budget:

  • The 5700X3D features 96MB of L3 cache which significantly reduces memory latency issues in gaming. This allows it to punch way above its weight class, often matching the gaming performance of the AMD Ryzen 5 7600 6-Core 3.8GHz despite the older architecture.
  • Total platform cost is significantly lower. You can pair it with a solid Gigabyte B550M DS3H Micro ATX and TeamGroup T-Force Vulcan Z 32GB DDR4 3200MHz for less than the price of a mid-range AM5 motherboard alone.
  • Thermals are manageable with a basic air cooler, which keeps the total build cost down further. If you go with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 6-Core 3.5GHz, you save even more, but the 8 cores on the 5700X3D will give him more headroom for background tasks like Discord or recording clips. AM4 isnt really a dead platform if the frames-per-dollar still beats modern mid-range options at this price point.

I am facing this exact same dilemma for a family build. I would suggest being cautious; I'm currently looking at the AMD Ryzen 5 7500F 6-Core 3.7GHz to mitigate those high costs.
