honestly im just so fed up with my current laptop it keeps freezing every single time i open a spreadsheet or try to join a zoom call and i just cant take it anymore. its this old dell with a celeron chip and i feel like its literally sabotaging my career at this point lol. im trying to build a basic home office pc over here in chicago before the end of next week because i have a huge project due and i need something that actually works. im on a super tight budget like maybe 500 dollars for the whole build so i cant go crazy on parts. i was looking at amd because people say they have better value for money but i dont even know where to start with all the different numbers.

i just need it to be smooth for multitasking, lots of chrome tabs, maybe some light photoshop for our marketing stuff and definitely no lag during video calls. i dont need a dedicated gpu if i can help it since that would blow the budget. which amd cpu is actually the best for a budget home office build right now that wont leave me wanting to throw my monitor out the window?

I totally get the frustration, i actually built a similar setup for my cousin when his old laptop died right before a deadline. You might want to consider the AMD Ryzen 5 5600G 6-Core 12-Thread Desktop Processor with Radeon Graphics because it has a solid 3.9GHz base clock which is huge for those heavy spreadsheets. Be careful tho, the integrated Vega graphics rely heavily on your system memory. I would suggest picking up G.Skill Ripjaws V 16GB 2x8GB DDR4-3600 CL16 RAM specifically because the higher clock speed makes a noticeable difference in how smooth Photoshop feels. If you go with slow sticks, you might see lag during those Zoom calls when screen sharing. Quick tip: make sure your motherboard has BIOS flashback. Some older B450 boards wont boot with this chip without a firmware update first.

i just saw this and wanted to chime in... if youre trying to stay under 500 bucks in Chicago you might wanna check if there is a Micro Center near you for deals. honestly i think the AMD Ryzen 5 5500GT 6-Core 12-Thread Desktop Processor with Radeon Graphics is your best bet right now. its very similar to the 5600G but usually a bit cheaper because its a slightly different refresh and it comes with a cooler in the box which saves you more money. the cool thing about these chips is they handle the graphics themselves. since you dont want to buy a separate gpu card for your budget this is basically the only way to go. it has 6 cores which is plenty for zoom and dozens of chrome tabs. photoshop will run fine too for basic marketing stuff like resizing or light editing. your old celeron is probably a dual core which is why it dies whenever you ask it to do two things at once lol. it just cant handle the data stream from a modern web browser. to keep it smooth you really need to pair it with something like Teamgroup T-Force Vulcan Z 16GB 2x8GB DDR4 3200MHz. 16gb is the sweet spot because windows takes a chunk and chrome takes the rest. also please get a decent ssd like the Western Digital Blue SN580 500GB NVMe SSD or your system will feel slow no matter what cpu you buy. putting that together with a cheap b450 or b550 board will keep you way under that 500 dollar limit and itll be night and day compared to that laptop.
