I've somehow landed this big contract to shoot and edit a high-end nature documentary in 8K and I'm kind of freaking out because my current computer basically gives up if I even try to open the files. I'm trying to build my first proper workstation but I have no idea where to even start with the parts. I keep seeing people talk about Intel chips but there are so many numbers and letters like K and KF and i9 and I'm just staring at my screen like what does any of this do?
I have about $2,500 to $3,000 saved up for the whole tower and I need it to be ready by next month when we start the main editing phase. I'm based in Oregon so I can get to a computer store pretty easily but I don't want to get talked into buying something I don't need or worse something that wont actually work for 8K video rendering.
Is there a specific Intel one that is like the gold standard for this? I heard some of them have special things for video encoding but I don't know if that's just marketing talk. Sorry if this is a total beginner question but which one should I actually buy so I don't waste my money?...
The letters actually matter a lot for what youre doing. Basically, avoid anything with an F in the name. You want a chip like the Intel Core i7-14700K 20-Cores 5.6GHz because it includes Intel QuickSync. That isnt just marketing fluff... it uses the built-in graphics to handle the heavy lifting for 8K playback and encoding. If you get a KF model, you lose that feature and your renders will take way longer. The i7 is a solid middle ground because the i9 gets incredibly hot and might be overkill if you want to keep the total tower build under 3k. Spend the savings on a good motherboard like the ASUS Prime Z790-A WiFi II and definitely get a fast drive like the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB NVMe SSD for your cache files. 8K is mostly about moving massive amounts of data so having that fast storage paired with the i7s QuickSync will make your life way easier.
Man, 8K is a total beast but honestly, it is super satisfying once you get the right hardware. I have been using the Intel Core i9-14900K 24-Cores up to 6.0GHz for my latest projects and I have zero complaints. It is basically the gold standard for what you are doing. The biggest thing you need to know is the difference between K and KF. Whatever you do, dont buy the KF version! The F means it doesnt have integrated graphics. For video editing, you want that iGPU because it enables Intel QuickSync. Its not just marketing talk, it actually offloads the decoding of H.264 and H.265 files so your timeline doesnt lag like crazy. I am so happy I went with the i9 instead of saving a few bucks on an i7 because those extra cores really chew through 8K renders. Since you got that $3k budget, make sure you pair it with a solid motherboard and like 64GB or 96GB of Corsair Vengeance RGB 64GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30. 8K files are massive and will fill up your memory instantly. Just a heads up tho, this chip gets hot as hell when it is working hard. You are definitely gonna need a big 360mm AIO cooler like the ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III 360 to keep it from throttling during those long documentary exports... it works really well for my setup.
