Which budget AMD CPU is best for a student workstation?

Which budget AMD chip is actually gonna handle a mix of heavy multitasking and some light CAD work without breaking my bank?

I've been looking at the Ryzen 5 5600 since everyone says it is the gold standard for value but then I see people swearing by the 5700G for the integrated graphics if you cant afford a GPU right away. I am so frustrated because my budget is strictly under $180 for the CPU and I need to get this build done before my fall semester starts in like two weeks.

I am based in Chicago and prices are all over the place. Is the extra two cores on the 5700X worth the jump or am I just overthinking this for a basic student setup...

Honestly, I went through this exact struggle last year when I was trying to balance school work and some side projects. I thought I could save a few bucks on a basic chip, but man, once you get like 30 Chrome tabs open plus a CAD model, those extra cores really start to matter. Since you are in Chicago, you really gotta hit up Micro Center because their in-store prices usually beat anything online and they might have a bundle deal. Be careful with the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G 8-Core 16-Thread Desktop Processor with Radeon Graphics. It sounds like a steal because of the integrated graphics, but it actually has half the L3 cache of the other chips, which can make things feel a bit stuttery in heavy workloads. I would suggest aiming for the AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core 16-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor if you can find a cheap used GPU to get you started.

  • 5700X handles heavy multitasking way smoother.
  • Remember you will need a separate cooler for the 5700X tho.
  • Make sure your motherboard bios is actually updated first. Just dont get stuck with the G-series if you plan on buying a real graphics card later... it kinda handicaps your speed for no reason.

Honestly, the 5700G is gonna disappoint you for CAD work. It looks tempting with the 8 cores, but unfortunately, AMD chopped the L3 cache in half to fit those integrated graphics. You only get 16MB of L3 cache instead of the usual 32MB, and it limits you to PCIe 3.0 speeds. I had issues with heavy datasets lagging hard on G-series chips because of that cache cut, it is just not as good as expected. Since your budget is sub-$180, here is how the specs actually stack up for your needs:

  • AMD Ryzen 5 5600 6-Core 12-Thread Processor
  • Usually runs around $130. It gives you the full 32MB L3 cache and PCIe 4.0, which means much snappier viewport performance in modeling software.
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core 16-Thread Processor
  • Sits right around $160 now. You get the 8 cores for heavy multitasking, plus it keeps a low 65W TDP so it wont melt a cheap cooler. If you can scrape together a few extra bucks for a cheap used graphics card on marketplace, definitely go for the 5700X. Relying on integrated graphics for engineering software is just a recipe for stuttering and youll end up frustrated before the semester even ends...
