man im so hyped right now because i finally saved up enough to build my dream setup for competitive play. mostly playing valorant and cs2 but i want to try and get into apex too. i just ordered a 360hz monitor and now i need a cpu that can actually push those frames without dipping because stutters literally kill me. i've been doing a ton of research and i'm basically stuck between two choices right now and its driving me crazy trying to decide.

the first one is the ryzen 7 7800x3d because literally every benchmark says its the king of gaming right now and the v-cache is supposed to be insane for 1% lows. but then i see the 7950x3d and part of me thinks... maybe i should get the extra cores? i do a little bit of video editing for my clips but gaming is 95% of what i do. budget for the cpu is around $450-500 and i want to buy everything by next weekend so i can build it over the break. im in the US so i can probably hit up a micro center if i have to.

i also saw some talk about the 9000 series being out but people are saying the 7800x3d still beats it in games? is that true? it feels weird buying an older chip for a brand new build but i care more about raw fps in competitive stuff than anything else. my current build is so old it cant even hold 144fps steady so this is gonna be a massive jump for me.

so yeah i guess the main struggle is:

  • do i go for the 7800x3d and save some cash
  • is the 7950x3d worth the extra money for a high end build if i want the absolute best performance for competitive stuff
  • or should i even look at the 9700x even though it doesnt have the extra cache

what do you guys think is actually the play here for the most frames possible?

Honestly, dont even overthink it. Unfortunately the 9000 series launch was kinda a letdown for pure gamers and its not as good as expected for the price right now. I had issues with the dual-CCD setup on the 7950x3d in the past... core parking is basically a massive headache you dont need for competitive stuff. The AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core 16-Thread Processor is still the undisputed king for those 1% lows you need for a 360hz screen. Since you live near a Micro Center, definitely look for their bundle deals. You can save a ton of money on a motherboard and G.Skill Flare X5 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 kit. Use the extra cash for a better cooler or just save it for a rainy day. TL;DR: Grab the 7800X3D. It is way better for your wallet and actually performs better in games than the more expensive chips. Let me know if you need help picking a mobo to go with it!

Like someone mentioned, the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core 5.0 GHz Processor is the absolute king right now! It is amazing for those 1% lows because that massive cache keeps frame times super tight. Definitely pair it with some low latency G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo RGB 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 and a solid Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE cooler. It is the safest, most reliable play for pure competitive glory so you dont waste cash on useless extra cores!

To add to the point above: I actually had a pretty rough time trying to justify the higher-core chips for my own competitive setup. I initially went with a dual-CCD flagship thinking it would help with my video clips, but the latency spikes in Valorant were driving me nuts. The way Windows tries to manage those two separate core clusters is still pretty messy for high-refresh gaming tbh.

  • scheduling issues on dual-die chips can cause micro-stuttering in fast-paced shooters
  • you end up spending way too much time tweaking BIOS settings instead of actually playing
  • the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X might be newer, but without that extra cache, your frame dips will be much more noticeable during heavy utility usage Ngl, dont fall for the trap of wanting the biggest number on the box. For 360Hz, you really just want consistent frame times. Choosing the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D means paying extra for something that can perform worse in CS2 than the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D due to cross-die latency.
